The baby within you

You’ve seen those fuzzy gray ultrasound pictures of the baby in your womb that you get at the obstetrician’s office, right? You can’t tell the butt from the head. Still, that first sight of your baby, even if it’s just the flutter of a heart beat, is one of theĀ breathtaking moments in pregnancy. It’s real. It’s alive. It’s in you.
Now stop and take a look at this video of a dancing baby.
Pretty cool. That’s a high definition ultrasound image of a 15-week fetus provided by two radiologists from Harvard University who have done all new and wanna-be parents a favor. They’ve published a book – Your Developing Baby, Conception to Birth – with finely detailed, ultrasound images of the developing baby. They also provide graphics and a clear explanation of exactly what’s going on inside the mother, the role of the placenta, amniocentesis and other medical information. They take you on the nine-month tour with photos along the way. There are more videos and pictures on the book’s web site.
The authors, Drs. Peter Doubilet and Carol Benson, are husband and wife who specialize in obstetric radiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
Oh, and they have five kids.
