A fresh voice on autism and vaccines

Friday, April 11th, 2008

There are few health topics that stir up more emotions than the debate about vaccines and autism.
No matter how many times scientists point to studies showing no connection, a lot of people can’t shake the suspicion that there must be some connection. Often, the debate seems to degenerate into a shouting match - with neither side giving much credence to the other.

Now Dr. Bernadine Healy has weighed in with a provocative essay  in the latest U.S. News & World Report. Healy, the magazine’s health editor, is clearly part of the medical establishment - she once headed the National Institutes of Health and the American Red Cross. But she questions whether her fellow scientists have been too dismissive about the concerns. At the risk of inviting the usual suspects to talk past each other, what do you think could be done to satisfy the doubters and put these questions to rest?
