Twins set spring attendance mark … again

FORT MYERS — The Twins broke their spring training attendance record again this year, drawing 7,808 fans per game, bettering the mark of 7,620 set last year.

They definitely have a good thing going here. They sold out 14 of 16 games at Hammond Stadium, and the place was mostly full for the other two games.

It’s a sign of baseball’s popularity, and this area is booming population-wise. But you can drive to Sarasota, Dunedin, Bradenton, Jupiter and Fort Lauderdale (to name a few) and find plenty of good seats available, so these folks must be doing something right.

(Only recommendation I have for next year is to lower the volume on the PA system a few notches, soften the tone and let the baseball sell itself. Also, a note to the commissioner’s office: Look at the lineups the visiting teams used here. They are supposed to bring four regulars, but several Twins opponents ignored that edict.)

Anyway, there’s nothing like baseball in the hot sun. I left the press box and watched a couple innings from stands today, just to soak it all in. I fly home tonight, and I can’t wait to see my wife, but I’ll miss this place, and I know my roommate La Velle will, too.

Amen! The AAA & AA players that we pay $15-25 to watch is a “rip-off”. Play regulars as much on the road as you do @ home!

I’m hearing rumblings here in Az.about
the Twins and Astros in Tuscon. D-Backs
go to Casa Grande. It would be a great
move!

Tim, I do not see the Twins moving to Arizona any time soon. They have just built the beautiful Lee County Complex and in my opinion is second to none in regards to spring training complexes.

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought the main reason the Twins were in Ft. Myers is because there minor league facility is right across the street allowing them to have one of the better setups for Spring Training….. So unless for some strange reason they moved there single A club to Arizona I don’t see it happening…..

You didn’t really wait until the last game you were at to get some time out in the stands watching a game, did you?

Anyway… great job with the blog this spring, Joe. Thanks for all the work.

The Twins love their set-up here and have a long-term lease. They ain’t goin’ to AZ. They have a great relationship with Lee County and get every upgrade they need. Next up: New scoreboard. Whoever gets the contract for the new stadium scorebord will have to agree to install one for Ft Myers too.
