Liriano roughed up by Class A Sarasota

Looks like Francisco Liriano had a rough start tonight for Class A Fort Myers, giving up four runs in 5 1/3 innings against Sarasota. He gave up six hits, two walks and struck out eight. He also committed an error.

The box score doesn’t list his pitch count.

Do you think Reds third base prospect Juan Francisco has a little spring in his step tonight? He had three doubles off Liriano and finished the game 4-for-5 with three runs scored, as Sarasota won the season opener 8-6.

Liriano left in the sixth with runners at the corners and one out, up 3-2.

Devries came in and…double steal and single later, it was 4-3..so the inherited runners scored. Then Devries coughed up 4 more the next inning.

I listened to the game, he threw 82 pitches, 49 of them were strikes.

Valencia made the game intersting in the 9th with a 3-run bomb to put the Miracle within 2, but Ramos struck out on a ball in the dirt and was tagged out for the final out of the game.

Who cares. Season is over.

season is over? it’s 4 days old, and the twins are 2 wins against 2 weak royals pitchers to go back to .500.

i’m a little frustrated at the offense so far as well, but it’s bound to start coming together sooner or later.

From what I hear (and have been able to find and read), Liriano didn’t do terribly at all. It seems like he started out wild, settled down, and got pulled when his pitch count got high. While he left two on, it isn’t his fault that Devries pulled out a replica of last years Rincon and let both of his inherited runners score. All in all, the pitch count is rather good, he struck out eight in 5.1 innings, and didn’t have a teeerrible WHIP (though it certainly wasn’t great). I think this is encouraging more than anything else.

the best thing the twins can do is to relax about liriano and let him work his confidence and fine tune his pitches so that when he is back he is here to stay whether that is weeks or longer we need him in the long run how he is handled now is important. by the end of the year the twins should know what their rotation will be for 2009, this is a rebuilding year 2009 should be a contending year.

Just let Franchise pitch in the minors… with Joe Vavra teaching the hitters to swing on the first pitch, and not how to take a walk… this team will never score enough runs to make them a .500 win team. They might not even be a .400 team this year!

This is off subject, but the online version of the Strib sports pages has no report on yesterday’s game from Strib beat reporters. The only reports on there have an AP byline, and those guys are pro-Angel. What’s up?

I’ll repeat yesterday’s post. Let’s keep it positive until either May or the Twins are 5 games out of first. They haven’t even been through the starting 5 yet.

It could be worse. We could have:
Garza ERA 8.44
Bartlett .143

instead of

Young .400
Harris .231
Everett .250

Wasn’t Tardy just on K-Fan recently and stating that Liriano was fat? Not big or muscular like our watered down beat writers have suggested all spring, but flat out fat.

Tardy hinted that was one of the main reasons he was down in the minors.

Are the Twins not on TV tomorrow?

I’m not sure we should criticize them for swinging at the first pitch more. I remember last year and years before, much of the criticism would be how every hitter in the lineup would take the first pitch. The opposing pitchers caught onto this and delivered fastballs down the middle most of the time.

If Liriano spends the whole year in the minors, so be it.
By September, we will have evaluated Slowey, Blackburn, Humber, Bonser, Baker and Bass (possibly Mulvey and Duensing)in MLB.
We will know exactly what we have and what we need for next year’s staff.
Its all good.

Jason says:

No TV tomorrow.

Get Liriano up here…even if he only goes 5 innings…we have the bullpen to back him up; this squad needs a boost…if he gets roughed up his first time or two, so be it.

What’s the status on Baker tonight, Joe C.? We’ve been hearing a lot about nagging pains, flu symptoms, and the like….bottom line…is he ready to go tonight or are we looking at the B-squad bullpen again?

“Are the Twins not on TV tomorrow?”

I know its early, but Lamb has dropped below the Punto line. (.091)
Of course, Morneau is almost below zero.

FSN isn’t Joe Mauer. I’ve never heard of this before.

Saturday afternoon games are blacked out, unless on Fox national (KMSP channel 9 hear). It’s an agreement with MLB.

If the game against the royals is saturday afternoon, then yes it won’t be on tv.

Jason says:

April 4th, 2008 at 11:30 am

And I’m guessing they choose Sat. Afternoon to not conflict with NCAA Final Four games…or something….who knows….what do I care, I’ve already got my tickets….maybe they’ll actually get 30,000 there for a change

ES16 says:

I’m guessing the Twins/Royals won’t be the Fox National game.

Sid says:

If Twins/Royals is the Fox National game, it will because the Royals are highlighted.

ES16 says:

I looked it up. It’s the Tigers/White Sox. Wow…I can hardly wait.
