Everett headed to DL; Buscher promoted
Posted on April 19th, 2008 – 1:26 PMBy Joe Christensen
The Twins are placing shortstop Adam Everett on the disabled list with tendinitis in his right shoulder. Manager Ron Gardenhire said a player will be promoted from Class AAA Rochester, but the team won’t announce whom until after the game.
Update: The best guess on the pending promotion is Brian Buscher. Asked if he was still leaning toward a lefthanded pinch hitter, Gardenhire said, “Probably something just like that.”
Update 2: Buscher, indeed, got the call. The third baseman has batted .345 with four home runs and 11 RBI in 15 games for Rochester this season.
Matt Tolbert fouled a ball off his left foot last night, and Gardenhire mentioned that as part of the reason he went with Nick Punto at shortstop. Punto also is a .316 (6-for-19) career hitter against Cleveland starter Jake Westbrook.
Michael Cuddyer will fly to Fort Myers, Fla., on Sunday to begin working out with the Twins’ Gulf Coast League affiliate.

First!
It seems like Buscher is the likely call up, but I would rather see Casilla. I know he’s struggled so far this season and has trouble with the routine plays, but he is a very exciting player.
I don’t get why everyone wants to see casilla so much, he makes too many mistakes, even for a young player. Tolbert is young, and doesn’t average 2 errors a game like casilla. Eventually you have to quit forgiving mistakes on a player being “young” and realize they are just error prone.
It would be fun to see Casilla bat 9th and Gomez bat 1st and see them wreck havok on the bases. But Buscher would add some much needed power.
It’ll be interesting to see who gets the call. I think it is between Casilla and Buscher, but it’s hard to say which one.
Casilla would give them a SS guy and Buscher would give them some power. I wonder if they would consider Jones?
The thing with him would be that he’d need to clear waivers to be sent back down. So if they aren’t going to keep this guy long, it isn’t worth it for him.
jones sucks and so does buscher, when has either of them done well in the majors?
Taylor: They’ve both barely been in the majors, so who knows what they’ll do if given another look.
With Gomez and Liriano still developing this year, why not throw Casilla in the mix too?
If he doesn’t pan out, at least he’ll know it’s his fault instead of dealing with the mind games he’s going through now.
Of course Harris deserves it. But his success and the fact that he’s a Twins-type player reveal that he’s making it and will be around for next year.
I think they should do every thing possible to try and salvage Casilla, who’s at a career crossroads IMO.
You guys are slacking, only one really negative comment so far (see 2:02 pm), and no Punto remarks. Really disappointing.
Buscher does not suck. he’s hitting over .350 with 4 homeruns in AAA so far. Casilla is struggling at AAA, it won’t be Casilla
So it’s Buscher…
Joe, how long would you say it is for Cuddyer after he gets in Florida?
Matt Macri is another guy that I wouldn’t mind see come up. I’m a little confused as to why people don’t talk about him some more. I think he has a great bat as well.
But the hole right now is at SS, not 3B, hence Casilla probably gets a little better of a shot than Macri or Buscher.
Congrats Buscher!
Jon, Buscher has already been called up…
Just curious… Did anyone see Torii’s Catch last night in the bottom of the ninth?
casilla is the last guy they would bring up now, hes having a very rough go in AAA…so much for that….now i hope gardy is thinking about if not already had a “come to jesus meeting” with these coaches and players both…something is not right with this club and im not sure where, but they need to correct it soon, as i see this team as a very fragile unit at this time, and could be in for a very, very long summer if its not corrected now…they need to win some games and show some attitude in doing so…to put it easier, they just need to start hitting the damn ball….knock off the weak ground balls to middle infielders, the double play balls, weak popups, etc…just hit the damn ball hard somewhere and things will work…it would be hard to watch another game like last nite,,, and i know the pitcher was good, but we always say that…we give too much credit to the other pitcher and dont look long enough at our own shortcomings…get it together gardy and boys….enuf of my ranting…
opps I guess that was the top of the ninth. My bad
Buscher is up only because he can hit. He has 7 gms @ 1B, 5 gms @ DH, and 3 gms @ 3B.
good for buscher — hes played well and deserves it…maybe he can be a sparkplug along with tolbert, but the vets still need to carry this club…
lets hope twins show well on natl tv today…it would do them very well to do so…god knows they need a good game…
Oh, Gardenhire, any *&^%*^& excuse to start Punto.
Key to today’s game. Plunk Blake in the butt with a 96 MPH fastball. I’m sick of this banjo hitting lightweight tearing up the Twins.
Key to today’s game. Plunk Blake in the butt with a 96 MPH fastball. I’m sick of this banjo hitting lightweight tearing up the Twins.
That banjo hitting lightweight would probably be the 3rd most powerful Twins hitter.
LOL, just as he’s talking up Westbrook’s groundball rate.
2-0 on a Justin Morneau homerun…
lilbiscuit… I like the sentiment if not the results. Blake got plunked last night and then hit his first HR of the year.
But, we need to start getting guys off the plate and less comfortable up there. Start moving their feet a bit.
Nice swing Morny. Hope Joe, etal, were watching.
watching franchise pitch yesterday made me realize that this team has no chance this year. Don’t want to be mr.negitive because this tem is still exciting to watch, but frankie is NOTHING like he used to be. Furthermore it looks like he just wants to learn how to work with this new stuff rather than revert to his previous style. I don’t know if this has anything to do with hernanadez being here and all this talk about learning to pitch and yada yada. what was great about frankie was he just blew you away it didn’t have much to do with knowing how to pitch and that was exciting to watch!!
What I seen yesterday was a guy who’s future is getting lefties out coming out of the PB.
I hope I’m wrong and being an over-reactor
shameless… I’ll take up the baton and be Mr Positive today.
Frankie pitched a great first inning. If he can channel that into a full game, he will be great again. He still does look like he is doing too much thinking and uncomfortable with his new delivery. But, they didn’t hurt him much with the bats… 4 hits I think. But, the 5 walks killed him. I think it is too early to say he won’t be a dominant pitcher again. In fact, I am on record last week as saying he wins the Cy Young in 2010. But… he has a ways to go for that.
Nice play Harris to start that DP.
The thing about Buscher, is that he has been given every chance to play, they played him everyday in ST and he got starts last year yet he could never handle it up here, he has never had problems hitting in AAA….. Casilla though he has struggled he has good range in the middle infield positions and has speed….. Buscher has no range that 3B, is an ok 1B but thats about it…. He has never really been a bench player, I hope he does well but I thought we would of done better calling up a middle infielder. It just seems like an excuse to give Punto more AB’s
Gee that was almost an intentional walk to Nicky…. Nice swing Carlos. 3-0 twins
Thank you David Dellucci for not realizing that you are in fact allowed to catch the ball when it’s hit toward you in the air.
*sigh*
Well done Jason.
LOL, “that’ll score Cabrera”.
Nice throw Delmon.
Little quick on giving them the run Fox announcer. Nice throw DY and Joe blocks the plate. SWEET
Joe must be reading these blog entries. Blocked the plate and swung at strike one for a double. I’m getting excited.
Torri’s catch last night wasnot a rob job
Get outta the way Punto!
whoa nicky…take out two at once..lol…close…
blackburns showing well and great defense thus far, and some hitting even….ok thru 4…lookin good ….
I for one am very pleased that Buscher got the call.
I think that a lot of people are mistaken about him. I love the look of his swing and i think he could be a productive third baseman once he gets some confidence at the major leagues, not an all-star but productive, and his defense was much improved this spring training. He made some nice plays and didn’t rush the easy plays too much.
Buscher is cool!!
Want cuddy back…I can’t believe i’m saying that
I’m just not sold on span
Buscher deserves the call-up. He is hitting very well at AAA, and due to injuries very nervous defense by Buscher he didn’t get a great shot last year.
Casilla isn’t hitting, but he is getting on base. He has made errors, but all Rochester infielders have made a lot of errors. Perhaps every low throw is getting past the first baseman, perhaps the infields are full of bricks. Maybe all the Twins infielders have hands of stone.
Macri has hit pretty well, lots of extra-base hits (only one homer) has a RH bat and can play third, second and a little bit of short and first. He’s already got six errors, but I’m not sure what that means for sure.
DY and Gomez are looking good. They cover a lot of ground.
OF=good
SP=good
closer=good
1b, 2b, c = good
ss, 3b=not so good
middle relief=sporadic
dh=when kubel=good
world series 2009 or 2010
remember, I am Mr. Positive today.
Punto has now started 3 out of the last 4 games. I told you he’s gonna get 300 AB’s this year and if he does - that’s a truly pathetic sign that this organization is going down the toilet.
I thought Macri would of been a good option, people cite his error’s but I don’t think that is too much to look at if you look at past Rockies prospect rankings he was there top glove for numerous years…
What’s the latest on Bass and his back injury?
Lamb must not know how to bunt
Now up to Punto and Gomez, we will never get this run home.
Did Monroe get hurt?
No Monroe didn’t get hurt, they pinch ran for him because they wanted another run. And Tolbert is young and fast.
geez, even when the lads do well, they get knocked.
ben d… gomez has one of our three rbi’s.
bill… nick has been superb in the field
can’t we wait until they have bad games before we knock ‘em.
great game blackburn
Punto is superb because he jumped 4 inches to get a high throw from Morneau - something he and every SS in MLB should be able to do? I don’t carf about his defense. He is a joke at the plate and he continues to play. Why isn’t Tolbert playing SS? Did Punto get a hit off Westbrook 8 years ago in a minor league game, so Gardy put him in the line-up?
So part of the reason Tolbert couldn’t start was due to a ball fouled off his foot-but obviously he is ok to PR. WTH Gardy?
I’d love to see Gardy manage in the NL. He’d last 30 games.
Punto was awesome today. Four double plays, awesome defence all around. Harris had a great day with the glove too. Blackburn looks to be something really special.
And to the “its up to Punto and Gomez, now we’ll never get this run home” comment. Gomez had a two out RBI earlier in the game, and Nick has probably saved a couple runs today with his glove work.
bill… maybe you were away when we had the first throw out from the 5-6 hole all year; it wasn’t an accident that we had 4 DPs through him today.
Some of us do appreciate defense and Nicky gave it today. I like a 3-0 game. It would not have been a shutout with anyone else at ss today. IMO
But Punto has “probably” cost a couple of runs with his bat.
I don’t care. Punto sucks. The Punto apologists are so starving to find a positive aspect of his game that you point out the fact that he fielded a groundball cleanly and turned 4 DP’s. Whoopty frickin’ do. He got a disgusting INF single last night where he slid head first into the bag and I’ll bet Gardy looked at Joe Vavra and said “He’s back”!!!
I just don’t like the lame excuse for not starting Tolbert.
I understand Punto will get a start here and there, but Gardy shouldn’t BS everyone.
Also, who is to say Tolbert wouldn’t have helped turned those DPs?
Finally, blackburn gets his well deserved first win. Great game Blackburn. Appreciate the effort.
whatever. some people need to be negative every day. fine with me. have a good one.
Monroe- 2 for 3 today, a double and a single. Good job Craig!
Punto was very good in the field today. The win belongs to Blackburn with an assist from Morneau.
punto was awesome with the glove–anyone who knows anything about defense and turning dps will appreciate what nicky did today-those werent all easy and needed some great effort and throws…..
awesome job nick blackburn…just awesome–finally the kid gets his win-what an important man in this rotation this kid is going to be and finally a good day for craig monroe…2 hits and thats a nice start to bounce back.. craigs bat is going to play a big part in this twins offense yet this year…im hoping this win will be a spring board to some good things…they had lost the last 9 to these guys, so they needed this one bad-tomorrow will be a big day…chance to win the series-everyone i hope stays positive..
was nice to see the dps going the other way for a change…4 of em, that will kill ya, as we well know….
Very glad to see brendan harris and matt tolbert taking good obp focused at bats. hopefully mike lamb will go the way of bautista and cirrilo soon and we could potentially not have any gaping black holes in teh lineup for the first time in a long time.
I guess wouldnt even have problems with punto doing his adam everett thing at shortstop if he hit .250 as long as he wasnt taking at bats away from a better hitter.
Great, great defensive ballgame. Blackburn pitched very well, even though he gave up 3 hits when he had Cleveland hitters 0-2. Still, this kid has been more than anyone could have expected. It would have been nice to add some insurance runs when we had our chances, but I’ll take a 3-0 win over Cleveland any day.
“turned 4 DP’s. Whoopty frickin’ do.”
It takes athleticism and heuevos to turn the DP while the baserunner is aiming at your crotch for a collision target. Anyone who minimizes the difficulty in making a good throw, while avoiding the hit, has never played middle infield.
Tell me Punto’s offense has often been terrible the past 14 months and I won’t argue.
Tell me that he has no baseball skills or no heuevos and I’ll tell you that you are full of cr-p!
Hey Joe,
Any chance the Twins will make an un-”Twins”-like move and sign Frank Thomas for the rest of the year? Maybe cut Monroe to make room? Seems like a great opportunity!
Isn’t Frank Thomas still with the Blue Jays, Peter?
Thomas was released this morning, T.
i think they could sign thomas i know i would they need home run power off the Bench but i would make sure that he knows that he would split time with Kubel as a DH but that would mean they would have to trade or cut Craig Monroe
i think three years ago Thomas wanted to be a twin when the Whitesox cut or decide not to resign him during the offseason
We need a guy like Frank Thomas, who when he was benched for not hitting, decided to throw a hissy-fit and got released.
That is the kind of veteran leadership we’ve been missing this year.
If the younger guys use Thomas as a role model, they will cry like the commenters to this blog when the lineup is posted every day.
Then JoeC, LaVelle and Howard will have great stuff to post in their stories.
Sign Thomas! Cut Monroe!
Joe,
Tell Baker it’s Sunday so he should pick the sleeveless jerseys with the red hats. Twins still sell those items but barely wear them. If they did, they might sell some more merchandise!
I don’t know about the Thomas thing a signing like that could go either way.
Ultimately he’s a huge upgrade from monroe but his attitude would have to be a team first attitude and that’s not his reputation! If TH were still here I’d be comfortable with it because he controled the locker room. The guy can still hit.Can Monroe????
Thomas would not be a good fit in that locker room and there’s no way he’d sign with Minnesota knowing he was going to be platooned at DH. He’ll sign somewhere that will DH him full time.
Thomas was released this morning, T.
Wow…
JimCrikket….give me a decent team in the AL who needs a DH….baltimore maybe? they wont stay on top long with bosox and yanks. seattle?
Cleve, Det, Bosox, Yanks, Angels are all fine…hes not going to w sox or oak again.
Ben,
Angels?
Vlady, Garrett Anderson, Torii, Matthews, and Big Hurt.
Four outfielders and a DH all of whom will refuse to sit.
No chance.
I think Seattle might be a possibility.
Yankees anyone!
Thomas will go to New York!
Giambi will play first!
They did it with Rueben Sierra!
Red Sox
Big Papi and Big Hurt platoon at DH.
Uh……no.
Cleveland.
Travis Hafner and Big Hurt platoon at DH.
Uh …..No.
Detroit,
Sheffield and Big Hur….No.
Yanks,
Abreu, Matsui, Damon and Thomas for LF, RF and DH, when Posada catches.
Hmmmmm.
No.
Mariners are the winners of the Frank Thomas Sweepstakes IF….
they want to jettison Jose Vidro who hit .314 last year in 548 AB.
Is there really gonna be a winner in the Thomas sweepstakes? Seems like he is a clubhouse cancer, and any team that would sign him may want to keep a wary eye on the big guy.
Maybe if he was thrust into a situation where the team’s current DH was injured, maybe out for the season, where he would get every DH atbat, he would be happy, but reduced playing time led to his problem with the Blue Jays, and would only be revisited with a different team.
No way would the Twins put themselves into this situation, so we can pretty much put that idea to rest.
Thomas is a better bat than abreu, damon, or matsui!
Slow starts mean nothing to a guy of this caliber!!
He hit 39 HR’s in about 450AB’s in 2006
Vidro is more valuable to the Mariners then any of those guys are to the Yanks!
