Neshek to have elbow examined Friday

Posted on May 8th, 2008 – 5:27 PM
By Joe Christensen

CHICAGO — Twins reliever Pat Neshek will have his injured right elbow examined by Twins orthopedist Dr. Dan Buss on Friday morning.

Neshek, 27, left today’s game in the eighth inning after throwing a slider to Chicago’s Joe Crede. He was diagnosed with an elbow strain.

“I don’t know medical terms or anything like that,” Neshek said. “It just felt like it tweaked, rolled over real quick like a snap, kind of. We’re going to get it checked out tomorrow morning and make sure nothing happened.”

(NOTE: I misquoted Pat earlier, thinking I heard him say it felt like “it snapped.” Went back and listened to my recorder and realized he said “It just felt like it tweaked, rolled over real quick like a snap.” Big difference there, and I regret the error. I’m sure this is hard enough for Pat and his family tonight, dealing with the uncertainty. Anyway, the headline on this post has been changed. La Velle will have updates as we get them Friday.)

Though Neshek wasn’t sure, it seems likely that he will have an MRI exam.

He said he is “a little concerned because I’ve never had anything like that. Last year, I had a weak shoulder, but this is something I had to come out of the game for.”

This is a tough development for the Twins. If the injury proves serious, the Twins would lose their top set-up man, a key piece to their success. Neshek has a 4.72 ERA in 15 appearances.

Not good at all. Let’s hope it’s not too serious. This kid is so fun to watch and a real key memeber of this club.

If Neshek has to go on the DL, I think they should call up Humber and give him a shot in the pen. He could be a dominant set-up guy if used right.

Maybe now he’s going to have to start throwing overhand again. That would be weird.

Boy, the Twins’ pitching staff is getting stressed early in this long stretch of games.

Baker, Neshek…Slowey struggled.

This could get ugly in a hurry without a pitcher.

Actually, it will be Perkins. This just means Korecky gets to stay in the big leagues rather than being sent down after Friday’s game to make room for Perkins.

If the Twins do need a reliever down the road, Mariano Gomez would be a good fit. He’s a big lefty who can take some pressure off of Dennys (Grand Slam) Reyes.

Sad day for a great guy, though. He’s still young. With his work ethic, he’ll come back.

Steve says:

May 8th, 2008 at 6:58 pm

Kate, you have a couple problems with your post. Meat does nothing to build strong bones. There is no research to suggest that milk even does - in fact, there is research that says that animal proteins expedite bone decay.

Secondly, I seriously doubt that rat meat mixed with cabbage would help with an injury, except to take your mind off the pain with explosive vomiting!

BC Beneke says:

Neshak is one of my favorite players on the team… this is a terrible blow. His health is in my prayers.

(mark it down kids… I’m not mean all the time)

BC Beneke says:

May 8th, 2008 at 7:45 pm

T-

I seriously think worrying about our pitching staff is the last thing we have to do as a whole. I worry about Neshak as I said, I love the guy, but we have some amazing pitching prospects at all levels in our minor league teams. One guy I might like to see is Yohan Pino… he is a pitcher who can pitch out of the pen.

rebeldream says:

May 8th, 2008 at 7:54 pm

This is a huge blow to the twins… although if there was some weakness leading up to this, that might explain some of his not-so-hot outings earlier this season.

As gross as this is, with Guerrier not having found his 2006-7 stride yet this year, Rincon being Rincon, Bass showing his rookie-ness, and assuming Reyes will eventually come back down to Earth, the loss of one of the best set-up guys in the game is not as bad as it would have been last year. There are a lot of (nearly) major-league ready arms in the farm system, and maybe one of them will have some staying power and we can see less of Rincon.

rebeldream says:

May 8th, 2008 at 7:55 pm

flatblade says:

I am assuming at least a DL stint for Neshek. cmath has it right–he will be disabled and Perkins will be recalled to start on Saturday. I also agree that M. Gomez would make the most sense, especially if Reyes is now called on to set up Nathan.

BC Beneke says:

Three things about today’s game:

a. Wishing Pat well; hope that it’s a little thing like a tricep issue and that he’ll be up and pitching soon

b. What really made me angry about the game today was the behavior of the blowup doll, fan-ripping clown the White Sox are calling a manager, poking fun at Guerrier in the dugout, when Guerrier was trying to tag the runners out after the blatant mistake of the home plate umpire to issue a non call. MLB has to have some sort of a behavior policy for coaches. How long do you think that this clown would be in the league if that was the NBA or the NFL? Totally inexcusable.

c. Last night Gomez did not try to steal a base after his single because the Twins were well in the lead. Tonight, that slide on Tolbert’s legs to ‘break the dp’ after the runner was out by a mile was unacceptable. ‘Hard baseball’ play, maybe, but the next batter should have gotten a fastball really up and in. It did not happen.

Ryan Gleason says:

May 8th, 2008 at 9:54 pm

Perkins was called up when Baker went on the DL; he’s scheduled to start Saturday. If Neshek needs DL time it should be Mulvey or Duensing.

SethSpeaks says:

May 8th, 2008 at 9:58 pm

Perkins hasn’t been called up yet, Ryan. When Baker went on the DL, SLowey came off the DL.

If Neshek needs DL time, Perkins can take his spot.

jama says:

May 8th, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Can you really say a guy with an ERA of over 4.5 as being there best set up guy this season? Yes he was good 2/3 of last season but he hasn’t been the same since about August of last year.

I am wishing the best for Pat and hope he fully recovers. But just because he is injured doesn’t mean we need to exaggerate what he has done this season.

thrylos98 says:

May 8th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

The problem with Pat’s injury is that the other righties in the ‘pen (other than Nathan) are either unreliable (Rincon, Crain) or too green (Korecky) or delegated to long relief roles (Guerrier, Bass).

I hope that Pat is not out long, but if he is, the sane thing to do is to have Guerrier as the set up man (he has the best stuff; Rincon is all over the place ,Crain has velocity back but that ball has no movement, and Reyes is a situational lefty) and call up Mariano Gomez. It would not hurt to have 2 lefties in the pen, esp. if there are none in the starting rotation.

Boof@NutriSystem.com says:

May 8th, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Yes you can say he is their best set up guy we have and that he is imperative to our success, he’s given up more runs this year however they have been off his newest pitch (change up) and he’s thrown it in situations where he had room to give up a run… you can also say that Pat is a prime young pitching prospect with devastating stuff. If he can return (pending no Tommy John) Twins’ fans’ blood pressure during the 8th inning can return to its normal state. I’ll be on edge with every lead during the Boston series with out pat.

Hope you get back in the game pat…

Look out Marino!

May 8th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

“Can you really say a guy with an ERA of over 4.5 as being there best set up guy this season?”

One inning relievers ERA’s are often skewed, because of lack of innings.
He can be effective 16 times in a row, give up 4 ER’s twice and his ERA is 4.00. And maybe a subsequent reliever failed to keep his runners from scoring.

Yet he was effective 16 out of 18 appearances.

Why is Punto being discussed on a blog about Neshek getting hurt? Give it a rest.

romer says:

May 9th, 2008 at 12:46 am

If Neshek is out, I’m not worried about the pen that much. Guerrier will replace Neshek fine.

The problem remains Rincon. His pitches looked about as intense as Slowey’s today, topping out at 91. Only problem is, he’s not a 4-pitch pitcher like Slowey — just a 2-pitch pitcher today with a change-curve with average, non-sharp movement.

Nico says:

May 9th, 2008 at 12:48 am

Neshek and his stupid gimmick delivery is garbage. He’s a mediocre pitcher and won’t be missed.

romer says:

May 9th, 2008 at 12:58 am

We need Punto to produce because he’s about to give Harris a day off. Too bad Morneau can’t get a day off too.

Harris, Lamb, Morneau, and Kubel have not been producing.

The Bosox lineup is fearsome. It’s gonna be hard to even get a split in this 4-game series.

frankie says:

May 9th, 2008 at 1:18 am

nico, you couldn’t be more WRONG.

06 - 37 IP, 53 K, 6 BB, 23 Hits, 2.19 ERA, 0.784 WHIP.

07 - 70.3 IP, 74 K, 27 BB, 44 Hits, 2.94 ERA, 1.009 WHIP.

his “gimmick” delivery is as deceptive as they come, and when healthy, he’s dominant.

twinsfan32 says:

May 9th, 2008 at 1:26 am

Rincon has been terrible for what 2 or 3 years now?? im not really surprised that he isnt doing well. He should get back on the juice, atleast he could get some outs back then.

4 game series against the red sox right now is trouble. especially with boof starting the first game of the series and then the next game is Perkins. hopefully the twins can go 2-2 and split the series.

rebeldream says:

May 9th, 2008 at 1:30 am

Nico-

Just a thought… the guy might be looking at a major surgery that will take him out for 18 months and possibly the end of his career (1/4 of TJ patients never really come back).

Lay the crap off… yell about Punto, complain about Delmon, complain about our club having the second most strikeouts in the league, even trash on Pat if he comes back and is ineffective. But for now, lay off the injured kid who has been this team’s second (and arguably first) most effective reliever of the last two years.

Do you mean Rincon should drink some orange juice? or is there another kind of juice-like grapefruit??

Brian says:

May 9th, 2008 at 9:41 am

Imagine if the Twins trades Nathan in the offseason. They would be in a heap of trouble if Neshek is on the shelf for a while. Rincon can only get 2 outs in an inning (not the best trait for a releiver or closer), Crain’s location is questionable, especially when his fastball has NO movement. The big sweat has been good and bad (cue up the 4-pitch walk to Thome appearance the other day). And with Neshek, he hasen’t been “lights out” this year.

Nathan is building confidence in the rotation, bullpen and entire team. If they have a lead going into the 9th they are likely going to get a win. He is worth every penny.

Brian says:

May 9th, 2008 at 9:43 am

I suppose I should keep it to Neshek…

a Neshek 8th, Nathan 9th has really helpd this team this year.

Hope the injury is less than I fear it is.

give rincon a break his era was under 3 in 04-06 he hasn’t forgot how to pitch he’ll get it worked out, maybe needs new vitamins.
as i’ve said before our pitching hasn’t been the problem team era has been near the top, it could become a problem if the injuries keep up, not much major league ready talent in aaa and starting staff thin on exp.
problem has been inconsistant hitting, but they hit well in 06 just like rincon pitched well. so releasing rincon makes as much sense as releasing the guy in charge of hitting. just a little slump not to worry.

The lads are doing well so far. Much better than anyone could have hoped. Will they end up in 1st at end of year? Probably not. They shouldn’t from what they lost from last year and based on last year’s record. And, now the injury bug is all over their pitching staff.

But, if they would end up in 1st… will jimmy bee say they had a good year. No. Because, he will say that they were just lucky and wait till they fall apart next year.

It really is a sad person that has to have such a negative outlook on life (rain/hail at all Twins games; not going to be in 1st by Monday; etc.)

Pity the man, but really, ignoring the comments is probably more appropriate.

Morneau hasnt done crap. There are 50+ players in the MLB with as many or more Hr’s and he is a superstar, I dont think so. And batting .270 sucks too, but I can live with that if he is hitting dingers.

Carlos is the voice of reason on an otherwise insane blog. Ignore “what’s his name” I shall!! I am a Minnesotan transplanted to California. I watch every Twins game on DirecTV, and I tell you this team has given more this year than I thought they could and I’m going to enjoy every bit of it. And after the moves the Vikings made in the off season, it’s a great time to be in Minnesota. Now, if it would only stop snowing for you guys…..

Carlos G I am very happy that I influence yor life in such a possitive way. Sorry about dissing you the other day. I guess you are still mad that I said you would be running from lightning while seeing a game and choking on a hotdog as you ran

Morneau is a line drive hitter, not a home run hitting player. He is a big, strong, kid who happens to hit about 30 home runs a year because he is so strong. He is 5th in the American League in RBI, hardly anything to sneeze at. And hitting .270, 30 HR, 125 RBI is a fantastic player. But hitting more “dingers” and striking out 120 times while the Twins finish in last is what some people like….I guess. I suggest becoming a White Sox fan. Lots of solo home runs, coupled with lots of team losses. Man, that sounds like fun!

Carlos G says:

May 9th, 2008 at 1:44 pm

Macleod,
Thanks. You are absolutely right that they are giving everything they have on the field. That’s all I ever want as a fan.

It is a beautiful day today in Minny. If we had an outdoor stadium today, it would be glorious. Fresh cut grass. High wispy clouds. Birds singing.

Baseball the way it is meant to be played. I can’t wait for that.

Just get me out of that sterile dome!

Carlos G In all seriousness Blogs are an area where ideas are expressed. Yes some are possitive and some are negative. But when a Blog is full of repeated ideas it boooooores me to death. I try to be creative and in doing so I may rub you the wrong way. For this I am truly sorry. I am just trying to bring a different outlook on the Blog regarding the Twins and where I think they stand. I am nore a possitive person and I try not to be to negative of a person. If I just repeated everything everyone else was saying the blog would be a much more boring place. I will make a constant effort to be more supportive. Just think if all I said every single day was get rid of Punto or get rid of Everett. Anyone can say that it takes much more creativeness to step out of the box. Again sorry for rubbing you the wrong way

Carlos G says:

Now that’s funny.

Macleod says:

I am ungodly jealous of that new outdoor stadium being built. I am trying to get a transfer back home, and outdoor baseball is just one of many reasons. While Sacramento, CA has much better weather than MN, there is not a #2 on the list for reasons to live in CA over MN. Until then I will enjoy the weather, $4 a gallon for gas, $6 a pound for bacon, plummeting real estate prices and equity in my home, and the worst allergies of any city in the nation. Good times.

Macleod,
We did have a slow spring this year. But, having been through the seasons many times before, this one seems to be more unusual. Would have been a tough year to be a HS baseball player this year. But, hopefully we have turned the corner for this spring. The last couple of days have been great.
Weather in Mpls/St. Paul at this time:

I know Jimmy I just like your post of people gagging on hot dogs while watching a game while running from lightning more than you explaining why you post them.

However, no one can say say they dont like wispy clouds or singing birds.

jimmy bee says:

Carlos G says:

May 9th, 2008 at 2:09 pm

Ben,
You could prefer to smell synthetic turf and piped in noise and looking at the dingy colored ceiling in the dome to an outdoor stadium.

But, to enjoy that more than an outdoor stadium you DO need to be high.

lol

jimmy bee says:

May 9th, 2008 at 2:11 pm

I dunno GGG we just need to get more players like Kubel and sit outside in an outdoor stadium. This weekend would be great for outdoor baseball. release Punto get rid of Everettt

jimmy bee says:

May 9th, 2008 at 2:13 pm

I feel my IQ going down already. Release Punto get rid of Everett. Kubel is Great. Boof is our ace.

jimmy bee says:

BC I will ty to be funny and on a serious note more serious towards the subject of Baseball. Like I said it before I hate the dome but it is usefull when the weather is horrible out. When I get a ticket to the game I know there is no way it will get cancelled. I know that outdoors is where baseball belongs but Minnesota is known for bad weather. Look in the froecast and tell me when the next 75-80 degree day and sunny out will be.

what the .... says:

May 9th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

Punto does everything really well. But he’s best at sliding into first, hitting ground balls to the infielders, he has near warning track power, makes routine ground balls into web gems better than anyone and keeps Gardy’s seat warm when it’s cold out. That’s more than enough for a raise and an extension!

the rockies may be looking to get rid of garrett atkins sometime this summer. what would it take for us to get him? sure could use his bat at 3b.

I’d love to see him in there. But I doubt it will happen. My prediction: Matt Tolbert will be the everyday third baseman by the all-star break and Lamb will be a bench bat, where he has thrived his whole career.

Incidentally, what is up with the Twins signing career bench guys and trying to make them into everyday players? First it was Punto. Then Castro. Now Lamb. Note to Rob Antony and Bill Smith: It never works. Guys get so used to the bench routine, if they haven’t started regularly by the age of 28 fahgetabahtit.

Carlos G says:

May 9th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

cmath,
I agree with the Tolbert prediction, only I said yesterday that I thought it would be by June. I think Lamb gets May to figure out how to hit. After that, Tolbert takes over if Lamb hasn’t started banging the ball around.

Carlos G says:

May 9th, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Anyone notice that Twins are 7-1 in games started by Livan; 5-1 in games started by Baker? Those stats probably can’t hold up for the season, but I find odd statistics like those to be fascinating.

Twins are 2-5 in Blackburn starts (that’s just not right for this kid). 3-4 in Boof starts. 0-2 in Slowey starts. 0-3 Frankie’s starts.

(I know — this is a small sample).

Ben D says:

May 9th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

I cant believe Gardy not playing Punto tonight. I’m glad Tolbert is getting another start on 3B.

Ben D says:

May 9th, 2008 at 3:59 pm

We might just have a chance tonight.

jimmy bee says:

May 9th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

I don’t know why everyone was so high on Everett and so down on Punto. From what I have seen I think Punto is fielding better than Everett

cmathewson says:

May 9th, 2008 at 4:42 pm

Everett was rated at the top of baseball for shortstops several years in a row. Then he broke his leg. And now he has shoulder issues. I think he hasn’t come all the way back from either injury because he looks like the second coming of Juan Castro at this point.

shameless says:

May 9th, 2008 at 6:04 pm

Carlos G

Very interesting stats!!Even though it’s a small sample it shows a interesting pattern developing.

How many wins can a “washed up” soft tossing veteran win on a weak hitting team?

Yes I realise we are third in team batiing average but we don’t score against quality pitching.

I do like Hernandez but think it’s unrealistic to think he can win more than 15…..even with the hot start……something tells me his second time through the American League after the all-star break it going to be ugly.

mj1 says:

May 9th, 2008 at 6:48 pm

jimmy bee - its u and i against kubel- how so many people are turned on by this overweight, - personality, underachieving, poor me sob- its time, time to rid the twins of his nonproductive ways….in addition to that i would always keep punto over kubel…at least punto can go out and play some defense……

why is kubel in the lineup tonite against the lefty…what is that telling monroe?? i just dont get it…

mj1 says:

May 9th, 2008 at 6:51 pm

i like tolbert alot but i dont see this stuff about him taking over for lamb…if lamb does not produce, it will be buscher from the minors coming up to take over…..tolbert is a rookie utility guy and will stay that, at least for this season- beyond that i dont know…his value is to be able to play ss,3b,2b and switch hit…ideally you want some power at 3b..thats more to buscher than tolbert
