This blog kicked off with last year’s Back to the ’50s, one of the largest car gatherings in North America, hosted by the Minnesota Street Rod Association.
If you like classic cars, this is a must-see event covering virtually all of the vast Minnesota State Fairgrounds. If you love hot rods and customs then it’s a double must-see event.
This event is so big that several years ago a friend came to visit us from England just to get a taste of this event. He was blown away.
To see every car, you’d probably have to come all three days, though some people–those with long drives especially–start to clear out early on Sunday. If you see no other classic car gathering this summer, this is the one to hit. It is one of the great celebrations of the American car.
Fun, fun, fun.
This show is so huge, it’s almost overwhelming. I long ago quit trying to see every car that shows up, and instead just take my time and closely examine the cars that really interest me. And do so in the shade, if the day is particularly warm.
In any case, due to family scheduling conflicts, it’s looking like I won’t be able to attend this year’s event.
I have to admit, that my favorite show lately has been the Car Craft Summernationals. It’s getting bigger and better every year, and the participants seem just a bit less stuffy and stand-offish than the back to the fifties crowd.
Oh, and those stupid little dolls peering into the bumper??
Please? LOSE THEM!!! They stopped being “cute” about two minutes after I saw the first one.
Now that I photograph a lot of cars, I notice more the amount of bric-a-brac some people bring. I understand–you’re into you car, you collect stats, toy cars, etc., that promote your passion–but sometimes, when a car is totally amazing and the owner is not there, I think about maybe, quietly, lifting a few things down, getting the snap and putting everything right back.
Never do it though. Touching someone else’s car without permission–not cool…. I sometimes move ropes out of the way at display-only shows and museums, however…. No snitching, now.
Kris,
Here is a plug for the German Car Show also this Saturday.
