Uniforms: What do you think?

Posted on April 23rd, 2008 – 4:34 PM
By Chip Scoggins

OK, what are your thoughts on the new uniforms? Like, dislike, underwhelmed, what?

I talked to DE Lee Campbell who said he is out for the spring game because of a high ankle sprain. He said he tested it yesterday but is not going to be able to play.

Both Brewster and DC Ted Roof said Campbell was playing well this spring. Campbell, who is up to 260 pounds, agreed and is disappointed that the injury slowed him down.

Brewster wanted the media to pass along several announcements:

The team will have a victory walk at Gate H at the plaza at 5 p.m. There is a student barbecue and activities on the plaza at 5:15 with gates opening at that time.

They will have four 15-minute running quarters. They hope to be done around 8:15 p.m. and will have their autograph session on the field around 8:35 p.m.

I think new unis won’t help the gm/recruiter one little bit! This was the gm/recruiter’s SECOND recruiting class. He was the chief dude or dudette, which ever the case may be in February of 2007. He was accepting pay checks and he is the dude was supposedly in charge. This is his second bunch of recruits…and you can’t spin it any other way goldohfour. Check the history books about the way it all went down. He huffing and puffing Rosebowl talk all over the place.

So, IF the gm/recruiter wins 5 games in his second year…that would most likely going 4-0 in that meaningless cupcake walk that he has scheduled for ooc games and one Big Ten win.

Hate to tell you goldohfour, but one Big Ten win would leave horrified with what the future might hold for the direction he would be running this program into. One Big Ten win would mean that his Big Ten record would be 1-15. His overall record would be 6-18. The local sports media would be kicking his defenseless hide all over the place Monday through Sunday. The high school coaches would be talking pretty darn unkindly behind his back.

His cause will be a lost cause if he goes 5-7 in 2008 and for the second year in a row doesn’t even get invited to a crappy bowl game.

but, just to set the record straight goldohfour…he has completed his second recruiting calls in February of 2008.

new unis? its all about Big 10 wins, see? lots and lots of Big 10 wins, not losses to MAC programs.

First of all, wouldn’t it be nice if the Strib actually had a way to flag comments as offensive like other real newspapers had? Or at least had editors that cared enough to remove such offensive comments?

Secondly the new unis are terrible. What is with the stupid contrast cording on the shoulder and the weird stripe pattern on the pants? For crying out loud did they not learn anything from the popularity of the throwbacks last year? Go back to the tried and true classic style with classic stripes, there is absolutely no reason to “modernize” the style of a college jersey. Modernize the fabric and fit fine, but these stupid stripe patterns are just ridiculous and unecessary. And the “Minnesota” is entirely too small, as is likely the “M” on the helmets.

Wren,

Brewster had the biggest improvement in his recruiting clasees in the HISTORY of college football. No other coach has improved so much from 67th in the nation to 17th. If your going to say he’s had two recruiting classes, then it’s the biggest improvment ever.

Gold04 says:

Now lets hope they play better in them.

Maybe if the program gets turned around, they will be able to take the MINNESOTA and player names off the uniforms and people will know who they are.

Looks like the signing of Jared Allen by the Vikings has effectively dropped the goofs and their dainty little uniforms as far into the news sewer as possible!

From Patrick Reusse:

“As for Brewster, he has been able to create attention for the Gophers with his over-the-top rhetoric. On Wednesday, the coach was reminded that in the Twin Cities, there are the Vikings and then everyone else.

Brewster was hoping to make a media event out of introducing new uniforms. By all accounts, the media gathering was meager, particularly in comparison to the reporters and cameras assembled for Allen’s introduction.

And when Allen started answering questions, Brewster immediately became the second-smoothest talker on the local football scene.

“And Jared isn’t selling anything,” Childress said. “That’s just him.””

Patrick Reusse can be heard weekdays on AM-1500 KSTP at 6:45 and 7:45 a.m. and 4:40 p.m. • preusse@startribune.com

Your new uniforms have done the impossible—made goof FB an even bigger joke than they were before!

How are those season ticket sales going for that new “corral?” lol

Go Vikes!

Rescooter says:

April 24th, 2008 at 7:49 am

As usual, Reusse is wrong. I will never understand why the Strib continues to keep him employed, but I’m not in charge there. Anytime a writer tries to become the news (as is Reusse’s case), I’d give them their walking papers.

As far as the Vikes vs. Gophers are concerned, the Vikes do draw more of the fanbase. The size of the crowd however should be no indication of acceptance by the Twin Cities market in general. The only thing I’ve heard is about his 3-DWIs and the ultimate hypocrisy of management to bring him on.

As of yet, I haven’t heard a thing about what he’ll do for the team beyond keeping Childress and his cronies busy keeping him out of trouble.

Uniforms look fine to me. I still think the gold on the pants looks too orange. Gold should be the color of, well, gold. More metallic.

To tell you the truth, as much as I enjoy the Vikings and the NFL, I wouldn’t care if they moved. The idiot 1-11, and the moron Reusse epidomize why many people feel this way.

There are plenty of football fans around to support both the Vikings and the Gophers. It’s a crock that the Gophers don’t draw more people, and every Gopher fan who can afford tickets, yet doesn’t go. ought to be ashamed of himself/herself.

I had Vikings’ season tickets for many years, but their constant price increases while not improving the product on the field drove me away. I still watch them every Sunday, and hope for the best for them. Just not at the expense of the Gophers.

By the way, the uniforms are nice, but really not that big a deal.

I agree with Coelacanth. The yellow should be replaced by a metallic gold ala Florida State or Boston College. I would switch the M on the pants with a maroon outline of the state of Minnesota or else Goldy running with the football. Nothing could be as bad as the yellow shirt yellow pants they wore last year

Jimbo - on your topic of football fans not going to games right now - trust me, based on the fair weather fan history of this state, given a SINGLE winning season, and another top 25 recruiting class, these losers that currently rip the coach, players, unis, new stadium, and everything else about the landscape surrounding the U WILL be the biggest fans in the world. If not, trust me, they’re not the people that you want at your event anyway…let them have their PS2 and NCAA College Football 2006 (cuz they don’t have the money for the new PS3 nor the newest version of college football) and give them this message board. True fans of this program don’t post here…true football fans don’t post here (regularly anyway), the negative losers on here are just that, losers…losers that need a platform - ironically, they’re pretty much the only ones feeding on this puppy. If you want good banter - head to Pioneer Press, or one of the gopher websites featuring blogging/message boards. The strib is terrible - and yes, they should be policing this site way more … so many offensive comments that should never even get posted.

But yeah, i’m going to stick with my season tix to both the Vikes/Gophers and continue to go to about 15 Twins games per season, and remain in the warming house until i can get my hands on Wild tix - screw the wolves - but yeah, true sports fans are around…it’s just not any of these idiots!

seriously - this message board can never stay on point…y’all can’t even answer the question being asked. it’s the same old same old too - I saw eye write the same thing 2 weeks ago that he posted earlier in this board - There are a couple posters that actually answer the questions, but it’s few and far between. I can honestly say, clicking the “see all comments” link is pretty much pointless on any of the Gopher blogs…it’s absolutely painful to see the peeps on here being so distasteful.

dayoldbread says:

April 24th, 2008 at 8:41 am

On the topic of the unis - if the idea was to continue to make the 60 year old / season ticket holding / UofM alums happy, then they’re probably going to go over like a sack of poo’. However, on a national level, and looking at the rest of the big10, their old unis were a bit stale. And sadly, having relevant unis on a national level is something the kids go for these days. It’s not all about X’s and O’s anymore, these kids need to see a marketable product - and these new unis fit that mold. Old school is great as a throwback from time to time, but it’s not going to attract the top talent on a consistent level - there’s something to having a more modern/relevant look…and yeah, they’re not ugly at all - and those that think they are only saying that because they have one more thing to be negative about - they could be the most beautiful thing ever, and the same people would proclaim that they “chunked in their pants”.

Rescooter says:

Recruiting: It’s 3. Check your sources. 2 recently and one several years ago. He’s quit drinking just like you’ve quit spamming this board.

You are very likely the person on this board that needs the most psychological help. It would be nice if you had someone that cared enough for you to do an intervention.

dayoldbread says:

April 24th, 2008 at 8:52 am

rescooter - how about you tell the rest of the board how many times you’ve driven home drunk (and should have been pulled over) but never been caught? seriously, EVERY honest person that isn’t Mormon on here has had at least one night where they were stupid…does that make EVERYONE in the US a bad character guy - and yeah, anyone that has ever gone to college and been a part of a somewhat normal friends group would probably admit to doing it multiple times - I honestly look back and wonder how I never wrecked a car / property / hurt a person…seriously, i was such an idiot back then - but since turning 25/26, I have taken a cab home EVERY night i’ve been drunk…$30 cab ride to Mendota Heights is well worth it considering the alternative. So yeah Rescooter…who cares if it was 2 or 3 - until he’s committed a felony I guess I just don’t care enough about his drinking and driving history…we’ev ALL done it! One more point…I would be willing to bet that nearly every MAAD, SAAD, or DAAD member has done it too…sheesh, who are we kidding when we bash others who screw up considering we’ve all done some pretty stupid things in our pasts.

dayioldbread: Are you as ignorant as you appear to be. I have not written anything here in the past two weeks. Haven’t you figured out that the dirty tricks people use other peoples monikers and go back to old posts and copy them and then run them over and over? This site has ZERO control over that sort of hype. You can be a fool and believe what you read here coming from the gopher hole people here, but you don’t go around saying the kind of crap you just tried to say about me.

The GO
OD thing is the fact that I have gotten my point across. The jerkls and creeps here actually miss it when I don’t post, so they try to assume my identity. I have gotten my message across. I won’t be commenting much further UNTIL the season starts. Then brewster will have either started finally winning some Big Ten football games OR I will be out drawing your attention to the fact that he is NOT winning Big Ten Football games, if that is the case.

The pressure is on brewster’s head to finally win a bunch of Big Ten Football games. If he does, that is a good thing. If he does not, may God have mercy on his football coaching career. The same is true for prexy b and macturi. They either will have kept the program where it was, OR, they will have failed miserably. It ALL depends on how many Big Ten wins brewster gets in 2008. He had ZERO Big Ten wins in 2007. IF he gets at least 3 Big Ten wins, he will only be doing what he SHOULD have done last season. If he gets less than 3 Big Ten wins, he is headed down the tubes.

Now, dayoldbread, quit being such a jerk and a fool. Of course, you are part of the problem with this site’s security. I’m looking through you and your type. I AM the eye!

eye - whether it’s you, or someone else - my point was how absolutely shady this specific blog/board is - it never changes…so yeah, if it’s not you, then cool, but that wasn’t my point - but way to take offense to my point even though i wasn’t singling YOU out … just the same posts that continue to show up on here - and if you don’t post on here…then why is it you always seem to jump right on here the moment someone points out your posting - it’s happened twice in the past 2 weeks for sure, i’m acutally pretty sure it happened last week. get a life…it’s you…and then you deny it with the same rhetoric and follow it up with the same post about how bad the coach was in his first year…eye in the sky, or head up your arse?

Rescooter says:

day old bread - Here’s my take on DWIs

1st) Stupid mistake
2nd) Alcohol problem
3rd) Ticking time-bomb

The fact that people like eye and Loon have done it does not make it right.

By the way: I like the new Uniforms. Modernizing them was a great idea. They’ll look very nice under the lights in the new stadium.

dayoldbread says:

April 24th, 2008 at 9:21 am

Rescooter - I’m with you 100% on your 1st one for sure, and 85% with you on #2…but i’m a bit 50-50 with your take on ticking time-bomb (DWI’s only) isn’t necessarily the case in all instances. If no one is capable of changing, then yes, sure, ticking time-bomb. However, that pitcher from St Louis who was drinking/driving and drove his suv into a parked tow truck on the hwy hadn’t ever had a DWI before - so i don’t necessarily think that it’s an indication that someones still a danger…anyone is a ticking time-bomb if they’re still out there drinking/driving - at ANY time! so, i would say that drinking/driving is a ticking time-bomb if you never grow up and realize how lucky you are/were that you never hurt anyone/yourself and change. However, i truly believe that most people are capable of change…maybe i’m just naive though…

I appreciate the fact that you do care and are fighting to try to make this a safe place to post. With some of the stuff that is posted here, the sickness of our society is taken to new levels.

I greatly appreciate your efforts. Gopher Football needs to have a place where it is safe to express one’s point of view about the direction of the program. To be villified for taking an honest stand based upon the record is ok, however, it is not ok to have one’s family members dragged into this board.

Slam me people, I will stand up for what I believe. However, (if I have a family) do NOT try to smear my family members the way some of you are doing.

You try to make people who do not agree with the praise brewster only group out to be “problems…”
