Verdell Jones Decision Monday

I just talked to Verdell Jones Jr., father of Minnesota recruit Verdell Jones III. The Champaign, Ill., point guard will announce his college choice during a press conference at 5 p.m. Monday, according to his father.

Jones has received scholarship offers from Kentucky, Indiana and Minnesota. He’s scheduled to visit Arizona Friday.  He is one of the top unsigned players in the country.

Jones’ dad said he’s not sure where his son wants to play college basketball. But he’s asked members of the Twin Cities media to attend the press conference. My theory is that Jones is going to Arizona to tell school officials that they have one final opportunity to officially offer him a scholarship.

If the Wildcats make the offer during Jones’ weekend trip, he will play for Arizona next season. If they don’t, he’ll be a Gopher.

Chip,

I think he is a Gopher either way. The Wildcats have a five star point guard coming in already. I like our chances since they are inviting the Twin Cities media all the way to Illinois.

Seems odd that dad would want our media to be at the presser other than the kid is golden.

If Verdell Jones signs with the Gophers, great. If not, so what. Tired of all this prima donna pre-collegiate drama.

Enroll in college already, summer school is coming.

Myron, Do you know if the media from Lexington, Bloomington, and/or Tucson have been invited to his press conference?

I think he is going to be a Gopher also. I did hear that Indiana is losing their starting point guard to academics/Cincinnati. That would open up immediate playing time for Verdell.

why didn’t Illinois offer him a scholarship? Did he not want to stay home to play?

Illinois does not have a need at PG. They have one of the top young Big 10 PG’s in Demetri McCamey (4 star) and they have another 4 star PG coming in 2009. McCamey was their best player down the stretch last year when they almost won the Big 10 tourney.

disgusting how these coaches follow these kids around with their pooper scoopers and kiss their butts and suck on their jock straps….

I wonder if he has ever been to Minneapolis in Jan/Feb. I have - lived there for 7 years. I believe he will realize this fall the mistake he has made when he sees snow in October.

It will not be Kentucky, because they haven’t offered.

UK WILDCAT says:

DON’T SIGN THIS GUY BILLY G. HE’S NOT UK CALIBER. PLZ NOOOOOOOOOOO!

Gopher says:

I’d question the standard of UK caliber UK WILDCAT… It doesn’t appear so prestigous as of late.

Gopher Nation says:

He’s not Kentucky caliber because he’s aiming higher than Kentucky.

He’s not going to UK, because Billy Clyde has backed off of him. And in case you can’t remember, the reason the prestige was “tarnished” was thanks to your current head coach and his lack of effort on the recuiting trail.

Wayne says:

All that will soon change with next years incoming class at UK. Check out who has already committed - Dakotah Euton, KC Ross Miller, and Dominique Ferguson.

I’m happy when Tubby doesn’t show any effortin recruiting, we come up with a 13th ranked class. Just think how good we’d be if he tried. LOL @ Kentucky fans.

Um…who cares about Kentucky basketball on a Minnesota board? You’re just another FedEx package from being gutted anyway.

But Billy Clyde did not get Paul McCoy, the No. 10 rated point guard in the country. He chose SMU and this kid had an offer from Kentucky.
