Royston to join Gophers

Posted on May 9th, 2008 – 8:35 AM
By Chip Scoggins

All indications are former Cretin-Derham Hall star and Wisconsin safety Kim Royston will commit to the Gophers football team later this afternoon after meeting with coach Tim Brewster.

Royston has been accepted to Minnesota and could start classes next month.

Royston will have to sit out the 2008 season and cannot receive a scholarship the rest of his career according to Big Ten transfer rules. Royston decided to leave Wisconsin earlier this spring.

Royston had scholarship offers from several schools but his first choice was to return home and play for the Gophers.

Royston will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

“Another castaway!” Pretty harsh for a kid that earned significant PT on a good Badger squad. Royston & Carufel realize they made a mistake but not going to MN right off the get go. Its highly likely both will be solid contributors in 2009 and make for some good practice fodder this Fall.

If the young man wants to play here as a walk on there is nothing but good in that situation. It is also a good message to the younger players both on the squad and still in high school.

Hey Wisconsinite, I’m glad that you condone intentionally attempting to injure another player. That’s some good sportsmanship right there. Your punk CB (who was getting beaten all day), threw the first blow. Decker got him back. That’s that.

I find it funny that you’re still hanging on to the memory of a game that Wisconsin apparently “wasn’t concerned about” last season. If you’re such a top-tier team, you’ll get over it.

The Gophers have a real shot at being a football power again. Royston returning home to play is another peice to the puzzle. I’m thrilled he is back.

Dave, our players won that game in their sleep, so you can wake up now. what Big 10 team gets up for playing a Div III squad? As i understand it, several of our players really hope to see brewsters kid on the field this year at The Camp. Since he ‘threw the first blow’ last year, i guess whatver happens to him = “thats that?”

Welcome home Mr. R and best of wishes. The walk-on players are the players I cheer for the very hardest! You display a REAL love for the game of football and realize that the reason you are going to college is first for the education and also for the chance to put your heart and soul into a game you love and a situation you believe in.

You show me a lot Mr. R!

I had the chance to work as a teaching assistant for one of Kim’s classes while he was here at the UW. He’s a smart kid who really deserves a shot to play. I have no idea why he didn’t get more playing time at Wisconsin. Our pass defense was non-existent last year and he should have seen the field more if only to try and send a message to our underachieving starters. Good luck Kim.

badgerman27 says:

Royston did everything the Badger staff asked him to do. Not really fair to call him a malcontent. He wants to play, and just isn’t going to see that happen at UW.

I wish him good luck at UM.

Wisconsinite, way to carry yourself with class. Your attitude is an embarrassment to UW, if you have any connection to them at all.

Wisconsinite,

What a classless jerk you are. What don’t you cry a little more. Let the gophers build up there program a little bit more and they start kickin ass. Remember Wisconsin wasn’t a powerhouse until the last 10 years so don’t think that cannot happen here.

Gary17 says:

I’m tired of seeing some of the top MN players treat the UofM like a fallback school. If Brewster(and especially Tubby) wants to keep the state’s best players he should tell them all that if they go elsewhere and fail or get homesick they will NEVER be invited back. Not even as a walk on.

Last time I checked we went 1-11 last year. It seems to me Brewster needs all the help he can muster. Would you shut the door to James Laurientes(sp) if he wanted to be a Gopher? Or John Carlson, Larry Fitz, Floyd, etc.

Kind of odd that you are this fired up over a competitor taking in a malcontent and whiner. If what you say is true, shouldn’t you be happy that he’s no longer a Badger? Sounds like you are pretty sore about losing a good player. Makes me feel good as a Gopher fan, so keep commenting please.

Wisconsinite, I wasn’t telling you to get over the loss, I was telling you to get over the Decker thing. It’s sad that you’d like to see a player injured to the point of needing surgery and it says a lot about you as a person.

You Badgers are some sensitive folk. Can’t take a little trash talking? Especially from an “inferior” team? Really, if you guys are so much better than the rest of the Big 10, maybe you should start acting like you’ve been there before, instead of getting all bent out of shape about what Clint Brewster said.

David, your comment is absurd. Crawl back under your rock.

Bayfield, Laurinaitis would be tough to say no to, you’re right about that. But I don’t think this Badger could carry his jock. Not too often potential NFL 1st round picks are going to transfer, here or anywhere. Stay off the fringe and look at the “normal” top MN kids. Many of the football and Basketball kids go elsewhere, mostly to WI. If they know right off the bat that the Gophers are nobody’s backup plan maybe they’d stay.

Hidalgo says:

May 9th, 2008 at 12:19 pm

Gary, Royston didn’t want play for Glen Mason. When Monson took kids back, they were players that initially told him no thanks. Big difference.

Brewster just took a scholarship offer off the table to a Minnesota player because he wanted to keep his options open and see if someone better came along. Sorry kid….Minnesota has moved on.

I’ll welcome any Minnesota kid back if they left because they didn’t want to play for Mason or Monson.

Bud,

Make sure that you put my prediction of 4 Big Ten wins this year and 6 wins in 2009 in a sealed envelope and lock it away in a safe. I don’t care about the non-conference because as Wren says those games do not matter.

The comment about saving my prediction of 4 Big Ten wins this year, obviously is your attempt to say when it doesn’t happen I’ll remind you. Go ahead. I have never been afraid to set the standard.

When Mase was coach, the Masonites (Loon, Wren and company) were too AFRAID to have expectations or set any kind of standard. It was a philosophy of one game at a time. If Mase somehow won 6 games he deserved a tinker tape parade. I came in and said we need to have a higher standard. I set the bar.

Lock my predictions away in a safe, I do not care. I have NEVER been afraid to have expectations for a coach. So remember 4 and 6. I don’t care what happens in the non-confence games (win or lose), because as Wren says only Big Ten wins matter.

I’ve watched the Gophers play at Camp Randall many times, and I’ve never had a problem with Wisconsin fans. Most true college football fans realize, that regardless of the team that you’re cheering on that day, that it’s just a game and no more. The filthy crude pornographer is just hurting so bad because Brewster was the best recruiter in the Big Ten this year.

Brewster and Zook are in a class alone as recruiters and Brewster edged Zook out.

The only two schools with better 2007 classes were Michigan and Ohio State. That is not recruiting, that is just being there to choose the top talent from among all the guys who want to play there. Tressel could not recruit a girls soccer team to come to Minnesota.

Bielema running across the field to meet Brewster was meant to be a direct slap in Brewster’s face for his statement of “When we win, I’ll be the first one to reach that axe”, or something similar to that.

It wasn’t in celebration, it was meant to be an insult.

david_allen_coe says:

May 10th, 2008 at 2:02 pm

badgerman … You are exactly correct. Bielema is a cheap little thug with no class or manners. That is the reason decent kids won’t play for him.

Brewster made his comments to U of M students at a frat pep rally, not to the media. That is the kind of thing you say to the student body to try to revive interest in a dormant program. For the baboon Bielema to take that comment as some kind of insult was insane.

But for Bielema to sprint across the field to get in Brewster’s face in front of 50,000 people and a TV audience was bush league and will never be forgotten or forgiven. He is a disgrace to the University of Wisconsin and to college football.

It sound to me that both coaches were pretty much “low rent” about the whole deal. Coaches should be dignified, provide public respect for their opponent and be real gentlemen. They should provide excellent examples of good sportsmanship.

It sounds to me as though both coaches should hang their heads in shame over that display. Poor form on both of their parts.

d_a_c aka jimbo aka pantherhawk: Your trash talking over recruiting rankins is incredibly pathetic and is most certainly material that will most likely come back at you in oh, so many ways on Game Day Saturdays during the Big Ten season. As long as the coach at Ohio State keeps winning the Big Ten championship you look incredibly boorish for knocking anything about him. You see, the thing is that he recruits to OSU.

At Minnesotaz we have a totally inexperienced dude acting as the gm/recruiter. He NEEDS lots of Big Ten wins on Game Day Saturday in 2008 and he will need even MORE Big Ten wins in 2009 to have a chance to continue to coach at the University of Minnesota.

Recruiting ranking trash-talking is for losers…

david_allen_coe says:

Wrenblahhblah … You do not recurit at Ohio State. You select.

Glen Mason would be playing for national championships at Ohio State if he had been chosen over Tressel. Neither one is a recruiter and neither one is an exceptional coach.

Talent falls in your lap at Ohio State. It does not at a dead program like Minnesota. Tressel could not rebuild Minnesota. Brewster can.

Actually…..
Kim was a two year letter winner, starting last season in the nickle packages. Had three full ride offers within two days of his “limited” releases to 13 NCAA schools. Great relationship with Mason, but you could see he would not be around 4 years. Kim was named starter after spring ball in 2007 and again after the Penn St. game. Bret changed his mind on both occasions stating “coaches” decision? Kim played every position in the secondary during game situations. Why did he leave? Players don’t walk away from full rides if everything is okay. Coaches don’t discourage useless players from giving up scholarships if they suck. And players don’t choose to walk-on, when they have other options if they don’t LOVE the school they choose to transfer too. For those of you who have issues with Kim going to Wisc. in the first place, be angry with me. I told him to take the most stable situation at the time, I was very wrong and I will spend the next 3 years paying for it (ouch). Much love to Wisconsin but MN is home, and we’re going to be needing that Ax back!

When will all the Gopher haters posting here step forward like real men and apologize for lying about Royston and his playing time in Wisconsin?

The truth is, he is a decent kid from a nice family. He could never be comfortable playing for a classless thug simian like Bielema.

Kim Royston is home now, and he will be playing for a great coaching staff and for his home state. That’s great.

Any other kids thinking of transferring back to their home state? It sounds like he wasn’t happy — but, why would he be happier here? I think it is doubtful that KR will be a starter here, given that the 09 recruiting class looks like it is off to a very good start and the 08 class was one of the deepest in years. If KR was on the two deep at Whisky, then he will bolster a thinner Gopher squad and we need depth to win games. Whatever his reason, welcome back to Minnesota.

What happened to “major impact?”:

Aug. 29–Only one true freshman was among the starters listed Tuesday, but coach Tim Brewster hasn’t backed off his idea that freshmen will have a major impact with the University of Minnesota this season.

The Gophers released their two-deep depth chart for Saturday night’s season opener against Bowling Green, with wide receiver Tray Herndon the only true freshman in a starting spot.

A few freshmen besides Herndon should see signficant time. Safety Curtis Thomas

I trash him myself just for the fun it (also I’m quite jealous because he has a plethera of gorgeous young ladies following him around and a 30″ waist!)

So in the spirit of mindless insults please allow me to add some.

Kim? You’re pretty ugly for a girl.

When you (Kim) take the field, Brewster is gonna say “what the hell” and cut you from the squad on the spot!

After your (Kim) first practice Brewster is gonna call the NCAA and accuse Bielema of trying to sabotage his squad.
