Should the non-voluntary portions of voluntary cosmetic plastic surgery be covered by medical insurance?

I guess it depends on what portion of the plastic surgery it would be. But any type of cosmetic surgery is not exactly necessary so I would say no unless it is for abnormal circumstances of the cosmetic surgery, i.e. surgery due to burn victims or reconstructive surgery.

I do think some cosmetic surgery is necessary - Breast reduction, for example. Unless you have felt the back and shoulder pain, I understand why people think it’s cosmetic, when it’s really not. I think that should be covered fully. But if someone wants implants or a nose job just because they’re not happy, then none of the surgery should be covered, from pre-op to anesthesia to follow up.

I agree - cosmetic surgery should be covered in cases where it is medically necessary, such as skin grafts for burn patients. But cosmetic surgery that is not medically necessary should not be covered.
