Informational interviewing and networking

Some people network into a job by going on informational interviews, meeting internal contacts, and learning about different companies from within this network. Have you ever requested an informational interview at a desirable employer? Was your experience useful?

I’ve never even thought about an informational interview. I guess it would make sense - you’re learning more about the company, and showing desire to work for them, and learn more about specific jobs and duties.

I asked for and received an informational interview at a company that wasn’t hiring at the time. 6 months later they were hiring and they called me since they knew I was interested. 4 interviews later I got the position!

I went on an informational interview for a company and considered it very useful. Since I was learning just as much about their company and possible future positions as they were learning about me I felt more at ease during the interview. Overall the time spent went well and if anything helped me with interview experience too.
