Foo Fighters at Target Center

Look for my review at www.startribune.com/music to see how smitten I was. There’s also a great photo gallery there from the show.
The acoustic setcame offa little awkward in parts, starting with the funny fact that the stage inexplicably dropped from the ceiling… it looked cool, sure, but a simple old-fashion rising stage probably would’ve been just fine, if less Spinal Tap. But then the whole run of songs after the acoustic was near-magic. Dave really seemed to be into the whole Minneapolis thing, starting with his praise for his new bandmate Jessy Greene and including his shout-out to the Huskers (”Can I just say thank you guys for living in the same city that Husker Du comes from”) and to Prince, whom he gleefully recalled covered “Best of You” athis bad-ass Super Bowl set last year.
Also, for those wondering about Dave’s comments on all the local clubs he’s played, he did First Ave with both Nirvana and the Foo, the 400 Bar with Queens of the Stone Age and 7th Street Entry with Scream. He didn’t mention the Uptown Bar, where Nirvana also played.
Let us know what you thought of the show, including Serj Tankian’s and Against Me!’s sets. Here’s the Foo Fighters’ setlist:
Let It Die / The Pretender / Times Like These / Breakout / Learn to Fly / Cheer Up Boys (Your Makeup Is Running) / This Is a Call / Stacked Actors / Taylor Hawkins’ drum solo /acoustic set: Skin & Bones / Marigold / My Hero / Cold Day in the Sun / But, Honestly / Everlong (segued back into electric setup) / Monkey Wrench / All My Life
Encore: Big Me / Long Road to Ruin / Best of You

I’m not big Foo Fighters guy but I really enjoyed the show. I disagree with your take on the acoustic stage. I though coming down from the ceiling was something fresh and new and exciting for those of us by that stage.
I agree, Dave seemed sincere in enjoying being here and entertained at every point in the show.
Great show!
Serj Tankian - I know nothing about this band and didn’t know what to expect but was extremely disappointed. If wearing a top hat and acting like it was a circus instead of a concert is talent…..he was very talented.
I didn’t know quite what to think about Against Me!. Maybe it was due to my spot in the cheap seats, but I couldn’t make out 3/4 of what they were singing and the other 1/4 didn’t make any sense (Condoleeza?).
They sure did seem to be enjoying themselves though.
Foo ruled. Didn’t stick to just the new album stuff…Loved that they opened with Let It Die. Very underrated song that doesn’t get enough play. Serj - He doesn’t really belong in the same arena as Foo. They are separate styles (I’m a big SOD fan as well). I would’ve preferred to see Serj with Disturbed, or Mudvayne
I just wish they would stop fighting.
2nd time seeing FOO. Was blown away once again. Stacked actors might have been the high point of my night. I thought Against Me! was great, however I was probably 1 of 10 people there who knew the words to their songs. Serj was terrible but made it easy to leave and grab a drink…
“You’ve got to love a love song” -great advice Dave.
The opening band was ok, a little rough but reminiscent of “garage punk”, would have been nice if the enunciated better. Tankian suck donkey balls, on his own he just can’t carry it. Foo ROCKED. Loved the show.
C’mon guys. Give it up for Taylor H and his drum solo. Hawk is the driving force to this band and it was nice to see him featured a couple times. His “Cold Day in the Sun” was awesome! Look out Dave, he’s got your pipes.
I think Dave’s got a jones for Jesse. He was unabashed in praise for her. Dave’s probably the best front man in rock these days (Arguments please… let’s keep this discussion going) and I hope his vocals last for a good long career. He’s got his head on straight. Likes to party but is growing up with the rest of us… at least a little bit.
Where does he come up with lyrics and ideas for songs like “Evermore”? Tuely one of the best songs written this decade and something guys should take to heart.
Stage was pretty cool. If nothing else, a great cell-phone-photo moment.
Opening acts - everyone else said it all.
Cool crowd, even if a little subdued for a Thursday show. (We’ve all gotta work ya know). Target acoustics are a little better than in the past - passable, but not great.
Yes many elements were cliched but this show rocked! Can’t wait to see them again. Why not add to the cliches… An outdoor FOO set in the summer would be ideal.
Jesse, Dave, Taylor, you’re welcome back anytime. I’ll shell out a couple Jeffersons to see you again.
Aldo: Um, “Evermore”? I think you mean “Everlong.” And it was written last decade, not this decade.
Yes, the show rocked. Grohl clearly has a thing for the violinist. My favorite part was when Foo followed up Everlong with a very hard-driving Monkey Wrench. Also, the article about the cliched elements was right-on: Grohl has an ability to make it seem like he is aware of and enjoying the cliches.
i enjoyed all three acts. against me! of course has the setbacks of playing first and sound doesn’t really get to be reasonable until half way through the set, but that’s what opening bands are for. they only did a couple song’s that weren’t from the new album which was cool with me since it’s the only one of theirs i own. \
serj brought more of a feeling of fun then he had with system. the sound guys were more on for his set. he and his band however seemed a little bit hit or miss. when they hit it was wonderful and made for a pretty good show. i had wondered but doubted if he’d do any systems song’s and i’m glad he didn’t it would have musically felt from the wrong place.
this was my third time seeing the foo fighters, and they always please to the fullest. the stage presence of both dave and taylor how could it be anything else. the other two times i saw them was when they toured with weezer and when the opened accoustic for bob dylan. this show brought both those performances together very well. the descending stage was really cool, and the video interaction encore break was awesome! he did as mentioned before really seem happy to be in minneapolis. if i had to pick highlights of the set it’d probably be ’stacked actors” and ‘this is a call” and if i had to whine about something i guess it’s be that i’d like to see an acoustic performance of “for all the cows” but that’s kind of reaching for a complaint ![]()
FOO FIGHTERS ROCKED… the show was awesome…on my feet for the whole show. Super high energy…Dave really knows how to get the crowd going. And people… he was giving jesse a hard time with all the smoozing… IT WAS A JOKE. He just recently had a kid and is a total family man.
As far as Serj Tankian…I sat in section 131 and had that stupid bright white light DIRECTLY in my eyes like 95% of their set…TOTALLY SUCKED ..was thinking of leaving it was so irratating. So glad i didn’t. FOO FIGHTER - YOU ROCK !!!
