Sly Stone cancels Chicago, too

Don’t feel so bad. We weren’t the only ones to get stiffed by Sly Stone this weekend. On Monday came the announcement that the reclusive rock legend, who has been MIA for nearly three decades, was canceling his gig at First Avenue on Friday. Now comes word that he has pulled out of his Chicago show set for Saturday for “health reasons.” There are no plans to reschedule either performance.

In interviews this month with the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times, Stone had talked about restarting his career. He was hoping that two shows in southern California — he made it to those gigs last weekend — and two shows in the Midwest would help repair his image. And then he plans to return to the recording studio. However, the mysterious Stone, who developed a rep in the early ’70s for canceling shows or starting them very late, appears to be just as unreliable as ever.

Did you take a gamble and buy tickets to Sly’s First Ave gig? Why? Or why not? Please post your comments here.

Yea, I bought a ticket. I figured if I spent $65 and it was a bad show well you win some you lose some. However if I didn’t go and found out it was spectacular I would regret it a long long time. I read a review of one of the LA shows and it sounded uneven but interesting. I’m bummed it is not happening but I’ll get my $65 back anyway.

I was very excited to see that Sly was coming around, and so of course I bought a ticket. The guy’s a legend and, if you ask me, he was Prince before Prince was Prince–if you know what I mean. People kept saying “do you think he’ll show?”, and I thought why go through the bother of setting up a tour if you’re not showing up? Little did I know. If all he did was come out and play “If You Want Me To Stay”, that would’ve been enough. Can’t even get that.

They don’t call him sly for nothing. I saw him about 8 times in the late 60’s and early 70’s….every concert was the same thing. Started a half hour late…played about 30 to 45 minutes and he was gone. I was going to buy tickets..but I guess age has taught me to not be a sucker BUT man I would have loved to see Sly and the Family Stone …ONE MORE TIME !!!!!
