On Sunday, the New York Times delivered a startling SAY WHAT? moment in the midst of this historic Democratic presidential race. It’s analysis of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s fading prospects, it started off, “If not her, who?” It then considered a raft of up-and-coming female politicians, including none other than Minnesota’s freshman senator, Amy Klobuchar.
It was startling, if only because “Klobuchar” and “presidential candidacy” have rarely, if ever, been mentioned in the same breath. But there was her picture, in full color, along with 11 other women the Times’ writer deemed up-and-comers. The story’s nickel assessment was merely glancing: “In the Senate, the names that come up most often are Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Claire McCaskill of Missouri, both Democrats.”
But for better or for worse, after less than two years in the Senate, Klobuchar’s name is out there. For the entire Times assessment of future female presidential prospects, go here.
No response yet from Klobuchar’s Senate office.
They’d have to be high on drugs to even consider Klobuchar.
In a world where a freshman Senator with no other national experience manages to all but lock up the nomination in April anything, no matter how stupid, is possible.
Given a choice between a freshman senator with limited national experience and a flip-flopping old codger with anger issues whose campaign is financed by his rich wife, I’ll take the freshman senator, even with the clunky name “Klobuchar.”
Amy Klobuchar!!! Please!!!! Our country has lost focused.
Great idea, a president that talks like a retard.
I propose we (and the New York Times) table this particular discussion regarding Sen. Klobuchar for, oh, 8 years or so.
you, have got to be kidding me…
I’d take her over any of the current top three. She’s smart, direct, and honest (from what we’ve seen so far as Attorney General and U.S. Senator).
Klob was not Att Gen. She was County Attorney.
She will, in time, be a fully reasonable candidate, especially if she continues in her current moderate and pragmatic style. She is a strong law-and-order type, and she comes off that way, and republicans and independents like her. Her margin of victory in her last election would be hard to top in her next one, and it was impressive. In 2012, were it not for incumbent Obama, she’d be a sound candidate for president (instead of term two in the Senate. She’ll make a good VP choice this year, if MN weren’t so wrapped up for Obama already.
Klobuchar for President?! You have got to be kidding me - she’s not even qualified to be a senator.
It’s amazing(well, given the Red Star - it’s mostly socialist hyperbole) what passes as news for this paper.
Klobuchar isn’t qualified to be US Senator, much less President. She was very soft on crime during her stint as Henn. County Attorney. She’s also a terrible administrator.

worked in 2000 and 2004
Klobuchar would make an excellent Democrat candidate. She has all the criteria:
–to the left of most socialists
–has no significant experience
–what little experience she has proves she is incapable
Made to order ala Clinton and Obama!
I can see it now…..2012, Klobs vs TPaw! Finally, an election where the Minnesota candidate can actually win!
I can see her campaign slogan now..
Free Cell phone service for everyone.
Right up there with her amazing work in the senate so far Cell Phone Bill of Rights, now there’s a world changing issue for ya.
Klobuchar would be an excellent presidential candidate. Her moderate politics and willingness to work with Republicans and see beyond Red and Blue is the kind of leadership we need for the future. She’s got my vote.
Amy Klobuchar represents Minnesota well and with a few more years in office I am confident that she would be an excellent Commander in Chief.
It would take a DIMWIT to vote for a DIMWIT let alone consider it!
Senator Klobuchar is an amazing woman, who is not afraid to speak up for the middle class. She would make a great Commander and Chief; I wish other politicians would learn from her honesty and hard work. I wonder when this ‘marble ceiling’ will be broken, and who better than someone like Sen. Klobuchar.
Bobby Sternberg, did you really have the ‘nads to write “after less than two years in the Senate” in your intro piece above. Did you so soon forget our most forgetable Pres. to be, what’s his name, that more sly (thus sinister) Mayor Daley from the land of Honest Abe.
“after less than two years in the Senate” Please man. Sexism trumps racism I guess.
I admire her intelligence and due diligence. She won the campaign against Kennedy by hard work and outwitting him, even though he had Bush Jr. and big oil backing him.
I’ll vote Sen. Klobuchar all the way, go Amy! We need some more great leaders in this country.
no personality, and even less attractive than Hillary. Not a chance
Typical that a guy would be challenged by an intelligent woman and try to disregard her based on her looks. Oh, how prevalent sexism is.
It sounds like there are those who feel that a woman, especially a Democrat, is the ultimate candidate.
It’s worked so well for Hillary. Let’s see how well it may work for a lesser candidate.
I think it says volumes about the Senator that already she is mentioned in such an article. Even though she hasn’t been in the senate too long, her sensible and moderate record has gotten her recognized by the national press, which is good for her and good for Minnesota.
“Sensible”? “Moderate”? How? Klobuchar is a liberal Democrate who toes the party line on everything who got elected because old people like her dad. Whether you prefer moderates or not (I don’t), Norm Coleman is a moderate. If Klobuchar is presidential timber, there are 534 others in Washington who are as well.
Joan, I haven’t found Klobuchar the least bit creative, innovative, or particularly intelligent. She’s a more leftist version of Mark Dayton. That’s pretty bad.
I love this term “moderate”. First, it’s viewed as some universal good. Second, Democrats simply imply they’re moderates (Walz, Klobuchar, Obama, etc) and they’re worshippers repeat it. Before declaring them “moderate”, how about you look at their records. They’re far left. Nutty left.
Her William Mitchell reputation would have to be out of bounds.
I think Amy would be a tremendous choice for the White House. She keeps her promises, and even in the short amount of time that she’s been in Washington, she’s actually gotten things done. A breath of fresh air in Washington. P.S. What William Mitchell reputation? I think Amy went to Yale or something.
[…] AK for O-Veep? Well, next to Kathleen Sebelius, she is the worst speaker of all the prominent Democratic women I know of. And surely our nation is just dying to hear more about “jugs o’ fun.” […]
Klob for president? Ewwwww….
