Just a thought

Posted on January 22nd, 2007 – 2:40 PM
By Michael Rand

Perhaps we’re too accustomed to seeing athletes and coaches making nice after games, but we still found it odd yesterday that Tom Brady sprinted off the field without, as far as we could tell, shaking the hand of Peyton Manning. There are plenty of pictures of Peyton shaking Brady’s hand after Colts losses. Also, cameras captured a rather lukewarm and brief handshake from Bill Belichick when Manning approached him. Belichick looked annoyed more than anything. Now, obviously these are intense competitors — two of the best in Brady and Belichick — who had just had the Colts pull a complete reversal on them. They had the game at 21-3. They also were one short third-down conversion from practically sewing it up with a little over two minutes left. They were understandably ticked off. But don’t you have to give an opponent a little more due, especially considering the history? We wish we could find video of the first couple minutes of post-game, but we can’t. You’ll have to trust our memory. Did anyone else find the behavior of Brady and Belichick lacked a little class?

UPDATE: Thanks to KChia’s Former Roommate for digging out the forensic Youtube evidence, a concise clip showing Frosty the Coachman stiffing Manning and coming within one more question of killing Solomon Wilcots with his glare.

I noticed the same thing when I watched, but I also noticed about 200 cameras and press dudes…

if I was brady or bellicheck I would have sprinted the hell off the field and made a phone call later the next week offering congratulations.

I also saw the exchange between Bellichek and Manning and I can’t argue that it was anything but warm.

However, I don’t think it’s worth everyone getting worked up about today. These are extremely competitive people that after a loss, suddenly have 300 camera men making it impossible to get off the field. If I put myself in their shoes, I would run off the field after a loss.

Also, since Bellichek got so much grief for his fake hug, I thought the Bellichek/Dungy exchange look pretty heartfelt. They talked for about 10 seconds. Bellichek has to get credit for that if everyone is going to crucify him the week before.

Definitely agree that the Dungy/Belichick moment was sincere. He gets points for that.

Since this is a polite midwestern crowd, you are certainly more used to the great tradition in hockey where the players shake hands after a hard fought playoff series.
Speaking of the on the field media…notice it was mostly those darn print reporters and their photogs. Its people like Rand and his bunch that crowded Belichek and must have made him feel uncomfortable…or perhaps it was just the reality of a grown man wearing a hoodie with the arms cut off in a climate controlled dome!!

Ak_AK_ADAK says:

January 22nd, 2007 at 3:27 pm

Thats because Manning and Dungy are used to losing in the playoffs.. Brady and Belichick aren’t…
Also who cares who shakes who’s hand.. win the game thats what matters…

Personally, I just think Brady wanted OUT of there. I mean one step from the Big Bowl and they boot it ! It’s gonna be a long summer w/o starlets for Brady.

But, playing in that place must have been a madhouse. Domes are like that. They really should be outlawed the way they focus crowd noise on the field. If fans can’t make enough noise w/o a roof, they shouldn’t have a team. “Our” dome is like that too. Every barbarian and fool who wants to paint his face and bellow (and we’re talking only about the wives now) can jack up the decibels because of the teflon.

No, I think Brady wanted out of that sound soup as fast as he could. Probably had a headacahe. But, shake hands there ? Why, when he’ll see the guy later anyway

A Man of Wealth and Taste says:

Brady should’ve at least shook Peyton or Dungy’s hand before sprinting off. And while I agree that Belichick seemed to have a nice “moment” with Dungy, it looked like he gave Peyton the Mangini Treatment. Peyton looked like he wanted to say something to him, but Belichick didn’t even look at him, he just shook his hand and bailed.

So we have that odd exchange, the whole Mangini thing all year long, and the photographer thrown to the ground. The evidence is there to say that LaDainian may have been on to something last week (even though the “Shawne Merriman’s dance” comments were kind of wimpy). Bill could learn something from San Diego’s favorite local news anchor.

I’ll just save everyone the trouble of watching ESPN for updates on this:

TOM BRADY IS THE BEST BIG GAME QUARTERBACK OF HIS ERA. BILL BELICHICK IS THE BEST HEAD COACH IN THE NFL. THEY’RE BOTH SO COMPETITIVE AND SO WONDERFUL THAT YOU CANNOT POSSIBLY EXPECT EITHER TO HAVE EVEN THE MOST BASIC LEVEL OF COMMON COURTESY. TOM BRADY HAS TO APOLOGIZE FOR NOTHING. I ONCE STOLE BILL BELICHICK’S CUTOFF SWEATSHIRT AND HAVE SLEPT IN IT EVERY NIGHT SINCE.

Man, I’m sick of Belichick and Brady.

Paul Paulos says:

January 22nd, 2007 at 4:11 pm

There still 2 of the best in the game, man. Arrogant, yes it seems they are..at least Belichick. Easy to hate people for that..remember Moss..one of the best in the league back then, but people hated him too. Maybe, you’re a little jealous of Brady and his babes :)

I saw the Manning snub, but missed the supposedly v-e-r-y painful Belichick interview on CBS with Solly Wilcox. Has anyone found it on youtube?

Gopher Nation says:

January 22nd, 2007 at 4:22 pm

Did ESPN report that the Patriots lost?

Because if ESPN doesn’t report it, we know it doesn’t happen.

AJH says:

January 22nd, 2007 at 4:34 pm

Considering the amound of people on the field, and the way that Brady had just lost by throwing a pick, you can’t really blame the guy. I’d bet the house I don’t have that Brady found Manning before the Pats left the stadium and said congrats. As for Bellichek’s lukewarm offering? The man has no personality, so I guess it’s not his fault.

And as far as that organization being arrogant, when you’ve done what they have in the last 5-6 years, with the turnover in qulaity players that they have had, I think you deserve to be a little arrogant. The fact that they never look like they’re having any fun bothers me more than their arrogance.

A Man of Wealth and Taste says:

January 22nd, 2007 at 4:47 pm

Here’s both the snub and the interview.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=0s5vIkdnwqg

Wilcots looks like he’s afraid Belichick is going to order him killed after the interview. Too bad we’ll miss out on two more weeks of these kind of awkward moments.

Having the Patriots dominate the NFL landscape for the better part of 5 years was the sports equivalent of the Iron Curtain.

Paul Paulos says:

January 22nd, 2007 at 4:48 pm

Favre always looks like he’s having fun, and the team never comes off as arrogant…even when they have been good. I think playing in a one horse town with no other pro teams + very good coaches has always made them fun to watch ..and competitive at the same time. Belichick is in love with himself. Too bad. They were the better team Sunday and would have seriously wounded the Bear in the ‘Bowl

Ak_AK_ADAK says:

January 22nd, 2007 at 5:26 pm

I guess we ESPN failed to report that, in a Denny like moment, on a 3rd and 10 late in the game Belichick ran a draw play to his fullback, which less face it is pretty much like taking a knee, and setteling for a field goal. Oh and on a third and five that Brady throws a terrible pass to T.Borwn that fell incomplete, and had the Patriots converted that 3rd down it would have sealed the game.

Of course B.Favre always looks like he’s haveing fun… I always look like I’m haveing fun after a nice dose of Vicodin…

Belichick flat out has little or no class. 1. he’s been having sex with a married woman(reported nationally this fall) 2. Check out his interviews, (swore on national TV F-bomb, see you-tube) 3. basically assaulted an unknowing cameraman who was filming Mangini. (after playoff game) This guy, like childress just does’nt get that the media feeds the fans the info that helps make this sport what it is and that we as fans don’t have to buy their product.

Paul Paulos says:

January 23rd, 2007 at 3:05 pm

Just read that the married woman he was sleeping with was his wife….national reporters get it wrong too. After all, they reported Bush as the President
