The hats stole the show at Carolina Herrera. The felt, tweed, and tartan fedoras were striking. Many of them had feathers and some of them had feathers so long that they hung in the air several feet behind the models. That’s drama.

The theme of the show was, according to Herrera, the countryside. “The ease and sophistication of the outdoors. A riding jacket you grab from the mudroom over a crinkle chiffon gown for an elegant dinner on the farm….The city life left behind.”

Some of the feather-theme carried onto bird-print fabrics, which were layered under tweeds and wool capes. Riding pants and skirts shared the spotlight with dresses. There was lots of fur.

I do take issue with her statement about “city life left behind.” I think that a Herrera woman, with her proud-as-a-peacock hat would be readily equipped to conquer life in an urban environment. I suspect that’s where, in the end, most of these clothes will end up.
