Yesterday, I went to Monique Lhuillier’s New York showroom. I didn’t know what to expect the day before her fashion show, but Monique herself showed me around the collection.
Her two-year-old son Jack was there as were some of the seamstresses from Los Angeles, sewing on the final touches of the collection.
Here’s the scoop:
“There’s this whole flapper, loungy, smokey glamorous vibe going on in the collection. There’s a lot feathers, because i want to get movement on the runway. I picked colors from peacock feathers, so you see these beautiful royal blue collars. it’s just so rich and velvety, you want to touch them. They’re just so luxury.”
She was going for “1930s, but with a modern take.” She mentioned that there will be a darker set for the show. As for music, Lhuillier wanted to keep it a surprise.
All of the patterns are embroidered per Lhuillier’s designs. (That’s Monique’s hand in the photos.) The jewel encrusted collar was one of my favorites in addition to the peacock feathers. Below you can see how they Polaroid the models in dresses and line them up on a board.

While we wait to find out if the Oscars will go on, Lhuillier, an extremely popular red carpet designer said she hasn’t thought about it yet. After the show, the sample requests will start coming in.
FYI–This reporter smoothly stepped on a belt that was laid out on the floor. Oops! Hopefully the show will go on despite my misstep. We’ll find out later today.
