Marc Jacobs ends fashion week with a knock-out punch

Take that, audience! Marc Jacobs, who has taken much slack for starting his fashion show an hour or two late, started it early on Friday night, by fashion standards anyway.
The invite called the show for seven, which in most circumstances means it would start 30 to 45 minutes late. Last night, Jacobs came on stage asking the audience to take their seats at 7:10 p.m. The show started at 7:23 and was over at 7:32. Having planned a whole night for this show, this reporter literally threw her arms up and said: “Now what?”
The speed was even an issue for celebrities–Posh Spice (my photo of this is dreadful!) and Ellen Pompeo came running in. The fashionably late, including Rachel Zoe, just missed it. She was turned down at the door for her tardiness.
Also unusual? Champagne, popcorn and T-shirts for guests. Plus, the runway was set-up like a concert stage, with Sonic Youth in the middle. They played a two-song set as models walked around the perimeter of the stage and then up to an actual catwalk.
The clothes were rather different than almost everything else on runways–monchromatic in grays and pastels. Prim and completely covered, the looks were also the opposite of his lingerie-deconstructed line for spring 2008. Many of the models wore tricorn hats, some in bright colors. Lower-than-usual-heels were down-right practical footwear. The entire show was the opposite of his lingerie-deconstructed spring collection.
Another curious touch? The run-of-show, which normally gives a descriptive list of looks, was only a list of models. This seems to signal a clean slate and a new beginning both for fashion and proper conduct.
