Daily StylePointer: Crate & Barrel is open and pretty

The new Crate & Barrel opened at Galleria last week to long, long lines. What was most impressive about the gathering? It wasn’t a bunch of just standing around and eating and drinking, though they did do that…people were shopping. It was a furniture and furnishings starved group. Funny, since we’d only been without a Crate & Barrel for a few weeks, since Southdale and downtown both closed.
The Star Tribune’s retail reporter introduced me to the company’s founder, the charming Gordon Segal, who is going into semi-retirement soon, but still acted like a kid in his first candy store with loads of enthusiasm for the new shop. He pointed out that he was happier having one really great store instead of two mediocre shops. Point taken! It’s our first full-fledged Crate & Barrel with an entire floor dedicated to the furniture.
As far as fashion goes, I liked these tortoise shell “torches” ($249 each). They reminded me of some fabulous B&D handbags that had a similar sheen. My lake-walking partner/stylist-about-town, also pointed out that they carry these large and fashion-forward totes for a mere $34.95 each. Quite a good deal in a very unexpected place.
