Polygamists stand out for fashion

I was so happy to stumble across this MSNBC article about the clothing and hairstyles of the women of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
They really do make a statement–with ankle-length dresses, makeup-less faces and bouffant hair. It’s clearly very contrived and carefully put together look. Chloe Sevigny’s look/character on “Big Love” now seem impressively accurate.
According to the article, the style is derived from a combination of 1950s clothing (when the church became more conservative) and 19th century pioneer woman attire.
The pastels? Feminine, but not strong.
Eerily similar Marc Jacobs fall 2008 collection. (I’m not the first to say that.)
The women never cut their hair. According to the article, “because they believe they will use it to wash Christ’s feet during the Second Coming.”
I say fascinating. Full text here.
