Rent a bridal gown– who knew?
Still in NYC this week. While having my daily grande soy latte and catching up with my friend Debbie on Wednesday, a former Seventeen magazine coworker, she mentioned she had an appointment to try on wedding dresses that afternoon. I immediately abandoned workout and lunch plans to tag along. We trekked to Brooklyn (during the snowstorm) to MyrJan. The owner, Myrdith Leon-McCormack (pictured, right) has been in the New York Times for renting dresses in addition to selling them. Debbie has some specific ideas in mind (mermaid, strapless and lace). With those guidelines, Myrdith, pulled some very unique gowns and had ideas about customization. While talking fashion talk, it turned out the Myrdith had worked at the Vera Wang show the week before.
The fashion insider opened her shop to give brides more affordable options (including rentals). Debbie and I then went to a few lace shops on West 40th Street in New York to look for potential Chantilly laces (pictured, left) that MyrJan could use over her favorite mermaid-style dress. If you’re into how clothes are made, it’s really fun to go find the fabrics yourself. (I had a lot of clothes made on a trip to Shanghai a few years ago.) You need to have vision to work on something so original. The options are kind of overwhelming, so Debbie will probably try on more dresses before making the Big Decision.
