Edun’s designer Rogan Gregory’ Go International collection will be in Target stores on May 18. Before we see the summer selection, it will debut at Barney’s! The high-end department store Barney’s in New York (May 9th through 11th) and Los Angeles (May 16th through 18th).

Everybody is excited about the fact that it is eco-friendly fabrics at Target prices such as this tank ($16.99) and zebra-print miniskirt ($34.99). Everybody, including Simon Doonan who has a http://www.barneys.com/b/browse/category.s?categoryId=485824&CMP=EMC-WS1600780658on the Barney’s website. Here are few excerpts:

SD: How did you get into bed with Target?

RG: I don’t just get into bed with anyone you know. There was a courtship. Target said they would make the collection of organic and sustainable fibers and I could design whatever I wanted so I couldn’t resist.

SD: Is the clothing REALLY organic?

RG: You bet your ass! All of the cotton used in the collection are 100  percent organic.

SD: Tell me about Target HQ. I imagine something out of a Bond movie.

RG: I’ve never been, but I’m sure they have enough resources to launch a space shuttle.

In conclusion, Rogan, if you do come to headquarters, call me!

Reusable shopping It-bags

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Plastic bags are so 20th century. You’ve probably heard that Americans throw away some one billion plastic polyethylene bags each year. It’s an addiction that has to stop.

Designers are getting into the spirit–Anya Hindmarch’s “I’m not a plastic bag” tote was one of the most sought after fashion it-items of last year.

Also getting into the act? Target. In the April issue of Vanity Fair (for subscriptions at least), I was thrilled to find this sassy red reusable bag. Nice, right?

In addition to the reusable Lunds and Byerly’s bags ($1.50 each), my other favorite reusable bag of the moment is “My Bag Cares.” It is made from 55 percent linen and 45 percent untreated cotton. For every $20 bag that you purchase, one tree is planted in the U.S. These bags are seriously sturdy.

I’m on the lookout for more reusable shopping bags–let me know if you find any that are practical and chic.

Daily StylePointer: Gryson for Target

Friday, April 4th, 2008

Another day, another new line at Target. This Sunday (online now), a limited edition collection of handbags from accessories designer Joy Gryson debuts in select stores.
Her resume includes Coach, Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs.
Many of the Gryson for Target collection features the designer’s signature touches: distressed hardware, braided handles, and weaving. There are several (faux) patent bags, but I’m into this navy drawstring tote ($49.99). Just enough nautical, just in time for spring.

Daily StylePointer: Target goes Subversive

Subversive_Look_10.JPG

Spring is here. A major must-have? Statement jewelry. Target has enlisted Subversive designer Justin Giunta to fit the bill. Giunta was recently a finalist in the prestigious CFDA/Vogue fund. (3.1 Phillip Lim won.)
Anyway, the Target collection is playful and eclectic. Most of the pieces–earrings, bracelets, necklaces–are more subtle than these lucite hinge cuffs, but that’s why, in addition to the $14.99 price tag, I like them. They are bold and bright!

Ta-da! The next Target Go International! designer

We interrupt the loads of local fashion news with the next limited edition collection for Target…Richard Chai will design the 10th limited edition collection debuting in August.

Chai, a Korean-American, is a Marc Jacobs alum, who once worked for Donna Karan and re-launched TSE. Perhaps these looks from his fall 2008 collection provide a hint as to what’s to come. On a side note: pretty hair, right?

Back to Target: Up first will be Rogan (who designs Edun with Bono’s wife) will have a summer collection.

Now about those Jonathan Saunders rumors…very sneaky… I raced across town during fashion to see the British designer’s New York debut during the Superbowl. Sheesh!

Jonathan Saunders coming to Target, but first in New York

Scottish designer Jonathan Saunders is rumored to be the next Target Go International designer. So I wanted to check out his New York runway show also his stateside debut. He’s wildly popular in Britain, where he’s already designed an affordable line for Top Shop.

His collection

The silhouettes were structured and fitted, employing color-blocking in panels. There were many pleated details (a major trend, as you surely know by now), but used in inventive ways–floating away from skirts like wings and dangling off of shoulders. Note the luxe fox fur hood.
According to the notes, Saunders was inspired by Irving Penn’s sand collages and Brancusi’s sculptures as well as classic science fiction. That would explain the futuristic slicked back hair styles and streamlined clothes.

I’m curious to see how this conceptual line might translate for the masses.

Target hangs ten with Shaun White

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Is Shaun White the next Isaac Mizrahi? Target has been sponsoring skateboarder/ Olympic gold medalist snowboarder Shaun White for six years–since he was 15. Who knew?
Now they’re tapping him for a new line — Shaun White for Target — that will feature clothes for young men and boys. It’s considered limited edition for the moment.

The line is set to debut late July. Interpretation: Back to school.

The next two Go International! designers? Wait for it…

Really, wait. The Jovovich Hawk collection “land” in stores on March 2, 2008. The first photos were in Harper’s Bazaar (here via Sassybella).
Up after JH? According to Women’s Wear Daily, The rumor is Scottish designer Jonathan Saunders. Who, you ask? He’s a popular British designer who isn’t so well known over here…yet.

Of course the big Target question of the moment is who will replace the irreplaceable Isaac.

Isaac Mizrahi leaving Target for Liz Claiborne

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008
0116_mizrahi.jpg

Isaac is moving on. He’s leaving his five-year old Target line to be creative director at Liz Claiborne.

According to the New York Times, Mizrahi’s line will be in Target until the end of the year. Will Target pick up another designer for it’s cheap chic arsenal? Mizrahi’s  line sold as much as $300 million a year.  There aren’t many fabulous designer personalities left to tap–now that Vera is at Kohl’s.

Yesterday’s news from Liz Claiborne was that John Bartlett was tapped to head up menswear. Where Tim Gunn, the company’s chief creative officer, fits into all of this? We’ll see….
