Wild signs Dallas Stars winger Antti Miettinen

Posted on July 3rd, 2008 – 3:05 PM
By Michael Russo

That’ll be fun to write on deadline.

Wild said a couple hours ago that there would be a smaller signing this afternoon. It has indeed now confirmed this is it.

Antti Miettinen, 27, is a two-way forward who scored 15 goals and 34 points in 69 games last season for Dallas.

He had one goal, one assist in 15 playoff games.

Don’t know much about him, other than he competes and was a Finnish Elite League star in the early 2000s. The scoring hasn’t seemed to translate over here. Got a great scouting report on him from somebody I respect that I’ll post later.

He signed on for $2 million, $2.5 million, $2.5 million on a tres-year deal. Call it a 28th birthday present for the Wild.

Is this their lone winger acquisition now? I’ll ask when I speak to Mr. Risebrough or Mr. Lynn later today.

By the way, biggest loss of the offseason? You decide.

Brian Rolston, Pavol Demitra, Todd Fedoruk or Mike Vogt, the assistant athletic trainer who keeps Marian Gaborik’s groin healthy with a deep tissue massage?

Vogt became the head athletic trainer of Columbus today.  Lots of luck to Mr. Vogt in the Buckeye State. Good guy.

I’m not touching the Vogt thing. Can’t say I blame him for wanting a new set of responsibilities, though.

vogt.

Goody says:

Why’d he only play 69 games? Injury? Brought up to replace someone?

toivo says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:12 pm

And seriously, we’re comparing Miettinen to SRV and Branko? Miettinen had almost as many points as those two combined.

The real Mike says:

Biggest LOSER of the offseason? RISEDUMP !!

FIRE RISEDUMP NOW !!

DUMP THE DUMPPER !!

Wild Road Tripper says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:12 pm

No Kidding, Michael. ‘Smaller’ signing? This is virtually microscopic. We have enough 3rd/4th line wingers now. Why another one? Centers, DR, centers, we need CENTERS (In case you have forgotten)…

The Mike Vogt hiring by Columbus is bigger news, especially for Gaborik. Good for Mike. Bad for Don Fuller (Wild athletic trainer, now he’ll have to help find a replacement for Mike) and especially bad for Gaborik. Worse for the Wild.

How ’bout all this good news? :P

Mark says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:12 pm

Hopefully they didn’t sign Miettinen for too much.

Vogt is a friend of mine so I knew he was gone a few days ago. I’m happy for him.

BoogieNeedsAGoal says:

Maybe the BJ’s are in need of someone to work the groin…

Michael up North says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:14 pm

I’m predicting Naslund to NYR is a few mins, and that’s why we got this crap deal.

Russo, might as well ask them why they are paying this 25-30 point guy like a 60-point guy? Makes zero sense.

kj says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:14 pm

toivo…

He’s got upside. Sure they may have overpaid but I think he’s a 2nd line guy on the Wild. I think he’s got a shot to play next to Koivu too.

WRT…no denying they need a center.

Russo…didn’t the Wild read your rant on spending to the cap limit??? :P

Missy says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:15 pm

So..do we have any ambition to have a Winger than can score more than a dozen goals a season?

Kevin in PA says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:16 pm

That’ll be fun to write on deadline.

15 goals, Mikey. Might not write it much.

osh says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:16 pm

Miettinen missed a handful of games last season due to a GROIN injury!!!

jimlove says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:16 pm

wrt….
so so so so so true.

I think the only way i’ll really be upset about free agency is if we don’t come out of here with a center.

hello dr. defensive centers peca & fedorov are still available. please. they’re old, and you won’t have to have them for too long.

sunshine says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:17 pm

AM doesn’t even kill penalties. I am pretty upset. I hope he can live up to his salary. He is getting as much as Parrish and he better put up numbers.

Rayraydavies says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:17 pm

What, is he some sort of groin mystic? I think Gaborik’ll get over it. Do we really have to cater to him ALL THE TIME?
It is in everyone’s best intrest he steps up and starts producing in his last contract year.

Reminder: Tuna, noodle, Naslund.

Goody says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:17 pm

osh - Doh! and our groin guy’s gone!

toivo says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:18 pm

I’m with you on this one, kj. Maybe more money and years than I’d like to see, but not the worst move in the world. Yes, still need a center.

I’m telling you, Vasicek. Unless Sundin’s coming of course. Where’s Schmidty? Hossa’s gone and that’s it? He needs to start pounding the Sundin drum. :)

kj says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:19 pm

sunshine…Parrish didn’t set the bar very high, did he??? :P

sunshine says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:19 pm

I think they are saying that Naslund has signed with NYR.

The real Mike says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:20 pm

Is there really, at this point, anybody out there who disagrees with me that Ridedump is a complete stooge and shouldn’t be axed immediately?

toivo says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:20 pm

He is getting as much as Parrish and he better put up numbers.

Numbers very comparable to Parrish’s last season.

Rayraydavies says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Who are THEY?

Rayraydavies says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:22 pm

I am in aggrement with you.

sunshine says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:22 pm

Well that is why I am upset at Parrish… he is making $2.5 + million and not even putting up 20 goals or at least the assists.

AM is going to the be the same way. We should have saved that money and gone after Peca. The only way we can get rid of him is waiving him. Not a very good signing at all.

toivo says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:22 pm

Is there really, at this point, anybody out there who disagrees with me that Ridedump is a complete stooge and shouldn’t be axed immediately?

Pretty sure, yes.

fedorov, peca, williams, vasicek

The real Mike says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:25 pm

Pretty sure, yes.

Toivo, so you’re on record as defending the Dumpper?

Down Rolston and up Brunette and Antti this FA period and you’re giving kudos to Risedump?

kj says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:25 pm

Peca 8-26 for 34 pts in 65 games last year. 35 games the previous year.

1.3 mil last year.

I suspect there is room for him on the roster - at least capwise.

I think he’s done tho…

Jason Williams… :)

Hockeydad says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:25 pm

KiPA - are you bombarding FOC with more material? I can’t get to the site anymore - just a lot of spinning Explorer logos…

toivo says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:26 pm

Well that is why I am upset at Parrish… he is making $2.5 + million and not even putting up 20 goals or at least the assists.

Well, two years ago when Parrish signed, his salary was 6% of the cap. AM’s is only about 4.5%, so really he’s cheaper.

woodcock says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:26 pm

Hmm Peca–34 years old–8g 26a–same number of points as Antti. Don’t forget DR is still likely to get some center. Maybe through a trade or maybe Morrison or someone else.

jeff says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:26 pm

its hard to make a splash and sign somebody when there was only one “splashy” free agent out there

Rayraydavies says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:26 pm

I think that I will not be going to any games at the Xcel unless it’s the Habs, Pens, or Bolts. Probably a futile plan for motivating change. Maybe we should all go on strike? A fan lock-out?
I may just go down to Chicago and check out Huet’s new digs with my god-son!

Would NYR consider signing Naslund a “major” announcement?

Michael up North says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Next up you’ll see the Rangers announce signing Demitra, now that they’ve got Nazzy.

They have the cap room.

toivo says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Toivo, so you’re on record as defending the Dumpper?

No, didn’t say that. I said that I’m pretty sure there are people who would disagree with you.

For the record, I think his results have been mixed and I don’t really have an opinion on him getting fired or not. And if I did, so what? Not my call, you know?

Hockeydad says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:29 pm

FOC is saying the Naslund to NYR is a 1-year $4.5M deal

sunshine says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Its still $2.5 million cap hit. If he can get us 20 goals, I will say he’s worth it. Right now, I just don’t really see it. Who is he going to play with? Gaborik? PMB? He shoots as much as PMB but he did play less minutes than PMB.

Let me rant for a little bit more. Then, I will calmly and rationally think this might not be so bad.

woodcock says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Ok, it’s cocktail time since it is a holiday. Boootleg? Pimms Cup? Campari and soda? Gibson? Can’t think about any more signings with that on my mind.

woodcock says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:30 pm

The cap hit is $2.3M.

Jason says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:31 pm

This is hilarious, Miettinen is a good checking line right wing, but that’s it.
He’s worth $1 million at best
95% of Miettinen attempted shots hit the glass.

Lucky says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:31 pm

I gotta believe that CL has to be thinking about giving The Dumpper his walking papers.

Rayraydavies says:

Maybe the major announcement is that Sean Avery has removed his Yves Saint Laurent high-tops from the MSG locker room.

Driver says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:31 pm

I like AM but with scoring 15, 11, and 11 goals over the last few seasons, he isnt the top forward…Ugh. Forget Peca. Forget those old role players. Im sick of role players. We need game changers. Impact players. Unfortunately doesnt look like that will happen.

Michael up North says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Michael up North says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 3:36 pm

We overspend on Miettinen.

We lose out getting:

sunshine - I’m not as concerned with “overpaying” when it’s only $2.3m. So, by how much have they realistically overpaid - $500k? It’s more of a problem paying $4.5m for a player more deserving of $3m.

This guy skated a lot of the time on Dallas’ top line with Morrow and Ribeiro, give the guy a chance. They got him for maybe more money than they should have but oh well. There is no reason to spend money on players who aren’t worth it just to spend money. Honestly, how many of you really thought Rolston would have been as good as he was when we signed him? Just because you sign a player, that doesn’t mean he will fit the system and be productive. This is a younger, solid two-way player who might produce some points. With the guys left in FA, there are no sure things except that they will all want a lot of money even if they aren’t worth it. I know people are probably hoping to get Naslund but he’s 35 and his production has been decreasing each season and he’ll probably want a ton of money. If we can get him cheaply then he’s worth it. Just don’t overpay like so many teams out there are right now!

DR: Really?

SH: Yep.

DR: Sh!t. Okay, tell you what. Just take him.

I have an uneasy feeling about this whole Bruno thing. I mean, when he played for us he was “too slow” so he goes off to Colorado, plays with the likes of Sakic, Forsberg, Smith and now he’s got all kinds of potential. Is anybody else a little confused about this? We don’t have a Sakic, Forsberg or even a Smith.

sunshine says:

I think we need PMB more than we need Parrish. If we could even get decent center for him, I would be grateful.

If you ask me Dougie apologizes way too much for skrewing up! He needs use the money more efficiently and use the cap to put together a winning team that players are proud to play for. Yes the wild run a great “business” but there is more to the sport than making money. The fans will always be here but the players obviously will not be if they dont believe in what the team is doing.

Stars fan here. I’ve watched Miettinen underachieve for three years straight. This is too much money for what he will produce in Minny.

The fact he played with Dallas’s top line of Morrow and Ribeiro and could not hold down that spot for the entire season and produce at a higher rate should tell you something. He was a healthy scratch at times and got moved down the lineup after failing to succeed when given a shot at the top two lines.

He’s physical and will hit, but I would not call him a two-way winger. He didn’t kill penalties for Dallas. He has a decent shot, but it misses the net a lot.

I wish the kid the best, but I do not think playing in a defensive system under Lemaire is going to help him. He’s not going to produce to justify that kind of money. I would have been more excited for him if he went somewhere that played a little more wide open.

I hope I’m wrong and that he does well, but I just cannot see it happening.

No excuse me while I try and talk (drink) myself into the Avery signing, when Naslund got the same amount of money on a shorter term.

I am sure Peca will go somewhere else and we will find a super scorer (in DR Terminology 11 goals per season) whom we have never heard of for 3.5 per year. That seems to be the WILD trend.

Then again..imagine if you are a Vancouver fan? They are in the same boat as us..lost lost and lost.

bfw: I don’t think Naslund was coming here either just because we are in the same division as Vancouver.

Do you think the Wild is going to push Foster’s return to after the trade deadline? If they are hoping to have 2 or 3 slots open for rookies, they will need his spot or we will have a Koivu-Moore situation in January.

no worries, Bandito, thanks for the scouting report. It’s just that, as Wild fans, we’ve never had a fan of the former team of a newly signed Wild free agent come here and say “Man I’m jealous, this guys is awesome, busts his hump every night and was a total fan favorite. I’m literally crying right now because we lost him.”

PS: I didn’t realize any Stars fans knew about complex sentence structure, so, you’ve got that going for you. (I kid.)

Drew says:

I’ve watched Miettinen over the past few years with the Stars. He was always supposed to put up bigger numbers but never could seem to crack the code in the NHL. Overall, I’d say he was a disappointment with the Stars, aside from a 20-25 game stretch last season when he played RW on a line with Brenden Morrow and Mike Ribeiro. Miettinen was nearly a point-per-game player during that stretch. He eventually tailed off a bit and found himself down the lineup again. He made $885,000 last season following an arbitration decision. I wouldn’t expect big things from him unless he miraculously “cracks the code”. Definitely needs more talented linemates to get production out of him. Oh, and the guy misses the net with his shots more than anyone I’ve ever seen. Watch out if you’re sitting behind the glass at the X!

“Antti will add speed to our lineup, score goals and compete hard, a combination that will mesh well with our team identity,” said Wild President and General Manager Doug Risebrough. “And he’s just 28-years-old. His best hockey is ahead of him.”

I just read an interview with Zidlicky on a czech website. Main points: Didn´t expect to be traded but thinks it´s better during the offseason than during the season. He called Demo and plans to call Skoula to learn more about MN. He sees the Wild as a new opportunity and is motivated to do very well.

Dampland says:

July 3rd, 2008 at 5:02 pm

Sunshine,

PECA is so old and washed up, spending 1.5 a year on him would be too much.

Folks, it is obvious that the Wild did little to address their needs this offseason. Be prepared for a 2008-2009 season at about .500 and no playoffs.

THe good news is that we will have a better draft position, and money to spend on a much better FA class next summer.

In the meantime, I hope the kids (Clutterbuck, Gilles, Hamilton, Benoit, etc.) are given plenty of ice time this season for the Wild.
