Still waiting on Sebastian

The Wolves practiced for about 90 minutes Thursday in San Antonio in preparation for tonight’s game against the Spurs with point guard Sebastian Telfair still running and shooting on his own because of a sprained ankle sustained two weeks ago in Seattle.

Asked if he thinks there’s a good chance Telfair won’t play again this season — there are, after all, only 2 1/2 weeks and 12 games left — Wolves coach Randy Wittman hesitated a count and said, “Uh, I think he’ll be back. I anticipate it. We don’t have the luxury to say he needs to get four or five good practices under him like we normally maybe would because of where we’re at in the season. But I want to be sure he’s ready.”

Wittman said they’ll try to work Telfair into some of Saturday’s practice if he’s ready and then go from there.

In some ways, the Wolves’ point guard injuries have aided the franchise in this season of evaluation. Randy Foye’s long kneecap injury allowed Telfair to blossom. Telfair’s March injury, in turn, has allowed the Wolves to watch Foye run the show from the point, perhaps for the season’s final month.

What do you think the chances of the Wolves resigning Telfair are? Is it even 50/50?

I’d like to get Telfair back for next year but dont no….50 / 50 probally about right. If Telfair was still in college you’d have to figure he’d be a high lottery pick….

I just heard the wolves are on pace to win as many games as they did during their first season.

I’d just like to congratulate McHale, Wittman, and Taylor. We really appreciate your wise decisions over the years and all the fantastic playoff memories.

Go TEAM!!!!

it wil dependon who offers him what. i don’t think he’ll leave the wolves unless some other teams says they will give him a shot to be starting PG or at least play 25+min/game. He knows he has that shot w/the wolves. i don’t see anyone else giving him that shot, not right now. if he improves and has a better year next year, possibly.

It depends on if he’s stupid or not. He does share some genes w/starbury.

How does he have a shot at starting with the Wolves? Isn’t Foye the starting PG of the future? Foye is too small to play the 2 unless the PG is big enough to defend other teams 2’s.

Telfair’s future here is dependent on the draft. If the Wolves end up with Rose or some other PG with their pick, he’s gone. Even if the Wolves don’t draft a PG, I’d be reluctant to spend too much on him. You have to figure at least one of Gomes and Smith will be resigned, and as noted above, Foye is likely the future at PG here.

I kinda hope that Bassy is gone next year, cause that would mean that we drafted Rose, which would be sweet! I read somewhere that Bassy said that he would love to go back home and play for the Knicks, maybe he will sign with them.

Foye can play the 2 spot as well. he’s a much better shooter than Telfair is. Yeah they also said Mitch Richmond was to small, spud webb, mugsy bogues, craig smith, etc.

I agree Sean. A great deal will depend on the draft. Curry has played himself into a top 5 if he comes out. cripes, kid can play.

I can see Gomes and Smith both staying. I don’t see demanding anything unreasonable. I see Smith accepting 2M/year for 2/3 years. which is very reasonable. Gomes-say 4M/season. again–reasonable. bears fruit–we should sign both.

Craig Smith is too small, that is why he isn’t a starter. Mitch Richmond played 10 years ago when a 6′4 SG was okay. Spudd Webb and Mugsy Bogues would barely be able to play Division 1 basketball right now, with the talent and height that is out there.

Basketball is a lot different now than it use to be. You don’t see as many 7 footers but as a whole the average NBA player is much taller and more athletic. Those guys you mentioned would have trouble in today’s game.
